Animal Smiley 019 Questions about Cats

It took me 5 years but I finally talked my husband into letting me get a cat!

Now I grew up with cats and have always loved them. I want to get a kitten for christmas as I think a kitten would be best for getting used to my dogs and vice versa. I really want to adopt a kitten too becasue I feel there are just too many cats/kittens that need homes so I need to focus on one of them. SO where do I begin looking? I always see cats at Petsmart when they do their adoptions on the weekend up I never really see many kittens. Also is there certain breeds of cats that might shed less? Or be better for people with alergies? Penny does enough shedding over here for a whole zoo of animals, lol.

I really want a persian as they are my favorite but I seriously doubt I'd find one up for adoption

Look in the newspaper. There are usually "free kittens" there.

The only cat that I know doesn't shed are the "naked" kitties.... can't remember their name.

I always wanted a Main Coon Cat -- the gentle giant.

good luck on your Christmas Kitten!

I would look at the local animal shelter. That is where I got my kitty and he is the greatest. You can also try searching on petfinder.com all you have to do is select cat and type in your zip code. Good luck!

www.petfinder.org

You can put in what you are looking for (cat, male or female, zipcode, etc.) and search local shelters/rescues and you can also look in the classified section for adoptions from individual people.

I have had many cats in my life. I have had persians, Himalayens, siamese, and regulat cats. By far my favorite is the Himalayen, I have had three. They do shed a lot and most likely you won't find one at a shelter, although I have seen them here. If you want to rescue a cat definatley look at your shelter, they always seem to have tons here. I feel so sorry for them my hubby won't let me go there anymore, I always want to bring at least one home and end up a crying mess. I can't though, we had to get rid of all cats we had about 7 years ago, my son is allergic. Good luck in your search.

My favorite is the ragdoll. They have really soft fur, like a rabbit but they do shed a little. The hairless cat is called a sphynx. We had a sphynx/rex mix, so it had really short wavy hair. He still shed a little too, just smaller pieces of hair. The second picture, my ragdoll is on the left and sphynx/rex is on the right.

If you're worried about shedding... Get a Bengal.. They have pelts rather than regular cat fur. They come in a wide range of colors and patterns! Absolutely beautiful cats! Very doglike in personality and usually love water! Price range can be $100-1200 depending on what you want. They are hybrids of the Asian Leopard Cat (the size of a regular cat.. nothing huge). Most of the "population" consists of SBTs and not really Hybrids because they are so many generations away.

If you want something with more size and energy, go with a Savannah (African Serval/Domestic Cat hybrid). They can run in the range from $300-8000 depending on the generation you want or if they are SBTs. They LOVE water and get a long fabulously with other pets. Bengals do too but I'm very biased with Savannahs. This is a fairly new breed (you can tell by the price tag) and most aren't that far away from an African Serval.

Personally, I'm going to be buying a pure African Serval kitten soon. They get to be up to 40lbs and need outside housing as well as inside housing. Since we've moved, we have a garage and two sheds. One will be "outdoor" housing when I'm not home (they can be very destructive).

I'll try to include a few pictures.

First picture is a bengal
Second is a Savannah Adult Male
Third is a Savannah Kitten (I think between F1-F3)
Fourth is a pure African Serval

Breny your cat is beautiful!! I used to have a calico girl but she wasn't fluffy. Like Shana said, why do you have to live so far???well, I don't think I can have another cat anyways b/c Kiki doesn't like any other cats, luckily she likes dogs.
I hope you can find a good home for her.

Shana,
Why not adopting from the city's animal shelter(pound)? they usually have kittens 'cause people just dump them and don't care what happens to them.

If you want a persian...you're going to have a major shedding problem. lol. We've got a persian mix of some sort....he sheds worse than our lab.

You could look in the paper. Sometimes it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. That's what happened for both of our cats. We were talking about getting a black female kitten - next day went over our friends house to make jam and she had found a female black kitten. We were in the PetsMart parking lot talking about getting a male kitten as a compainan - a lady walked up to us and said she found a litter by her house. Strange how stuff happens like that...

Good luck!!
