| Carpal hyperextension in dogs - anyone familiar? So, our oldest dog (13.5 yo, 35 lb cockapoo) has been diagnosed with carpal hyperextension. The ligaments in her front right paw have broken down and no longer support her wrist, so she walks "flat-footed" on that paw. It affects her gait, of course, and she is also putting more weight on the healthy left paw now, too. We believe she got this over time -- no traumatic injury, just a breakdown of the ligaments with age. Has anyone heard of it? Our vet has only seen a few cases in his 30 years of practice. It will never heal. Surgery is the only "corrective" option, and that involves major fusing of bones. Not recommended because of her age. So, instead, we are fitting her for a custom brace for that paw, from OrthoPets: Orthotic Brace or Prosthetic Device for Dog or Animal, including Stifle, Hock, Carpus, Elbow, Knee, Wrist, Ankle, or Paw. Would love to hear from anyone who has experience with this problem. Thanks! |

| I haven't heard of it before. Bless her heart. I think it is great that there is a place that can make her a custom brace, though. Love the technology and advances in science that we have these days Praying the brace helps her out!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I just want to say I am glad you found that site, I would have recommended something like that for her. Also I am so sorry your gal has been ddx'd with this. If she is not on glucosamine/chondrotin consider it. It won't cure this problem, but it could help. Try lots of water work for her exercise and or hydro bathing.
