Default Precious

All right guys. I'm not starting this thread to get into a heated discussion or to make anyone mad. I just really need some advice. I really hope that I don't step on anyone's toes. This is just really hard for me and I've been beating myself up alot over this.

So here goes.

Precious bless her heart is 14 1/2 years old getting cataracts, doesn't hear very well, has arthritis and, I'm constantely cleaning up pee & poop where she just can't control it now. She no longer goes upstairs she sleeps downstairs in the crate. I'm have to give her a bath at least twice a week because she pees in the crate and just can't get up to get out of it or to even go on the floor which I would not mind because I have ceramic tile.

My husband keeps saying that he just thinks that it may be time to put her to sleep. I just don't think she is at that point yet. I know that he just gets aggrivated at her. I just keep reminding him that she is nearing 15 years old and that's old for a dog and, that she just needs a little more understanding just like Wyatt at times. Because the very old and the very young have a hard time controlling their bladder among other things.

Anyway I got so frustrated with her Friday morning. I didn't say anything to her. I was getting Ethan ready for his last day of school and I went to pick his backpack up and she had peed all over it. So I had to wash it and take it to school with his homework when I went to his Christams party.

I'm not sure it's time yet to put her to sleep because, she still eats and drinks too well and I've told him that we have had her since she was about 3 months old and we owe her to keep her around until we know that she is sick and in pain and we know that it would be the best thing for her.

Anyway, sorry for rambling on I just wanted to see what everyone here thought. I'm just not ready yet because, I don't think that it is to that point yet.

Again I hope I don't make anyone mad with this post. I'm not posting this to get a bunch of you mad. I just wanted to vent some I guess and see what everyone here thought. Because, I do value everyone's opinion on her and respect it.

Thanks for listening.

IMO--I think you should wait till you are ready or she is in obvious pain, that way you don't regret it later on. I'm so sorry to hear that she is like this. Please keep us updated on what you decide.

I think you will know whe it's time! As long as she is not in pain and still eating she still has some quality of life.

I think you'll know when its time, she'll let you know. Don't do it until you're ready, so that you have nothing to regret later. If she is still eating a drinking and doesn't seem to be in terrible pain, I would say if you don't think its a good idea don't do it.

Default I agree

You will know when it is time. I had a 16 year old Aus. Cattle Dog/Collie cross who finally let me know. It is hard to explain, but she will let you know in her manner and actions, just as my Callie did for me. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. (By the way, this was not the first dog that I had to have put to sleep, it was just the hardest.)

This is a hard thing for anyone that loves their animal. Just to help you with your decision and trust me my animals will live out their life as long as they can I would take her to the vet to make sure she doesn't have a kidney/bladder problem or just get a wellness checkup. I would then invest in these panties and put light day woman's pads in them.

I think these are so much more comfortable for a dog then the diapers and they are cute on. I would really hate for you to get frustrated with her on something she can no longer control. I know you would feel awful.

I am a big believer, like you, as long as the animal is not in pain they will live. They have given us to much just to put down because they are going blind and are losing control. I can only hope that they die peacefully in their sleep.

My thoughts will be with you.

I agreed I think she will let you know when is time. I also agreed that if she is not in pain and still eating well and is not suffering I wouldnt put her to sleep. I know you get frustrated and we understand. Just breath in and remember all the great and happy years you had together. I love the panties livingdustmops recomended, they are very cute.

She has been very perky today. After I did the first initial post. She has been in and out several times today and moving around more than she has in the past few weeks. It is also around 50 here today and I know that has a lot to do with it.

Thanks everyone.

Im sorry to hear this i know how hard it is to see a loving fur kid grow old. To make the most difficult decision is one of the worste things any pet lover has to go through. You will feel when its time for her and she will show you dont do anything that you will regret later. When the time comes it will be very hard, but you will have more peace with it.

Just give her LOADS of loving - she understands

I'd try those panties first for when you can't be there and take them off and let her do her business several times a day, but they'd save dribbles maybe. She's old, but she's still getting around. You'll know when the time comes. I did.

Yes, Yes, I would get panties for her! It sounds like you love her a lot. What a heartbreaking situation for you. I'm glad to hear she is feeling in good spirits today. Best of luck.

I do not think she should be put to sleep if she is still eating and drinking normally and in no pain whatsoever. IMO, you should invest in diapers/panties to help with the accidents. I also think you should take her to the vet just to make sure there is nothing wrong with her that might cause her accidents. Good luck! She sounds like a great dog!

JMO.... I dealt with my little Zsa Zsa ( 14 years old ) illness . She was hospitalized 2 times for 2 weeks each time . It is much heartbreaking to see them fight for their life .

When Zsa Zsa died , she made me realize that sometimes a person have to let them go even if it seems not fair for us . She is now looking on me and I often cry when I think of her .

If you think she is well for now , it is ok .
