YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Thoughts? New behaviour for 6yr old male Last Sunday, I went out with Razzle, Magic our BRT was home with hubby and Zoey our female BRT. Well apparently Magic was very upset the whole time I was away. He whined, he made almost a howl like sound, he went into and out of his crate; he paced, he wouldn't settle anywhere for a few hours. This is what my hubby described. when I got home and heard this story, (Magic had greeted me with his normal enthusiastic Mom is home response); I palpated him all over, took his temperature, and all was normal. Magic has never made any sound at all that could be described as "howl like", and almost has never ever even whimpered. Magic has never suffered from separation anxiety. And while he is just "6" yrs old, understand the average life expectancy for this breed is 10 yrs. I'm worried that this might be the beginning of a type of senility. Just wondering if any here have any thoughts to share?

| Is your health okay? Anything he may sense and be worried about? Any upcoming weather events the day you went out? Jealousy, he wanted to go too? Try going again to see if he repeats that reaction... Position of the moon... seriously.... Hubby abuses him when you're gone.... lol... JK 10 years is not long enough....

| 10 years is far too short. I didn't know that about BRTs. I assumed they were like the big Airedales who can live to 19. I agree with Kathy's suggestion to test a few more times leaving the house to see if the behavior is repeated. If it is senility or any age-related thing, I would think you would see other signs. Same if it were a health issue. Does he seem clingy when you are home? Is he sleeping more than usual? Any changes in appetite? Maybe it has something to do with Razzle returning home and taking more of mommy's time? Magic had more of your attention while Razzle was away. Was the length of time greater than what it was in the past?

Jealousy - always - he wants to go with Mommy. But in the past he has always settled down; accepted that Mom's is gone; but will be back. Moon Position - lol - I don't know - I guess I could look it up My boy as you know is a retired show boy. I think maybe, (they are just so so smart), that he knew I was going to a show. There are certain tell tales; like mom's packs camera, table, box with groom stuff, and maybe of course my energy denotes where I am going; and this is first time I've not taken him to a show when I go, even when I go to observe usually Magic is with me. This time, wasn't a good venue for this; as only dogs entered where supposed to be at the show, and I was already sneaking in Razzle, ... it is verra hard to sneak in a BRT Plus I was there to observe and help out my YOrkie friends, and to evaluate some puppy litters; so Magic would have had to stay in the van; and I don't like to do that. So that is the backdrop as it were to the situation. Haven't been able to duplicate yet the situation, but one day this week, I went to work, hubby was home and no fuss from Magic. Magic and I we do have a very special relationship. He is my heart dog. We are very very close. Razzle is close to me too. Right now when I am typing. Magic's chin is on my left foot, Razzle on my right, Zoey off as the males claim my feet. I just want to be pro active and to try to do all I can, to prevent or allay senility. I do remember Bon Bon's thread. Magic has been under physio and chiro care for an old back injury. I do know that our lives have changed as a result of this; in so many many ways. So that could be part of it as well. Oh Gawd, I am going on and on and on. Thanks Kjc, Iwas hoping you would post.

Magic is not sleeping more than usual. His appetitie is great! I leave home all the time, regularly for work n such. But two wks from now, I have to help out at Purina Nationals, and Razzle will come with me, to be part of the meet the Breed booth, Magic will come on a different day for same reason, so that can mimic last wkends situation. Razzle came home about the same amount of time he was away the first time; three weeks, But both are older the second time. I think we both need to figure out stuff now, with his health condition. He has been severly restricted from exercise as I do physio and chiro.

When I worked with racehorses, after a race this horse would not settle, he kept looking back at the Winner's circle where they take pics of the winners... he did not win that day. I walked him back to it and posed him, although no one was there, even all the spectaters had cleared out. Stood him there for a minute or two then he was okay and we walked calmly back to the stables... I do get your worry... I'm doing the same with my 15 yo Peek a Boo. I begin to question his every move...making myself crazy, lol.

| Your concern and love for Magic is both heartwarming and heartwrenching for me. You and Magic have such a special bond, and you are so in tune with his health and emotional needs. He and his stunning brother will be such wonderful pups at the meet and greet of the Purina National charity event. I hope that Magic loves his special alone time with his mom. I also hope that there is a simple answer to why Magic was so unhappy last Sunday and that your apprehension is alleviated.

| I suspect he finally figured out that his sibling and his mom were out together and maybe even doing all of the things he so loved to do with you in the show ring, having seen things you packed. It may have taken this long for him to put two and two together and when he did, the situation was untenable! I believe he was jealous and who could blame him?

| I have been thinking about you and both of your boys this weekend. I'm sure you were very proud of both of them as they represented their respective breeds at the Purina National Charity Event. On Razzle's day to go to the show, I wondered if you had the same reaction from Magic as you did the last time you left Magic home. I hope that Magic was not upset this time and that you enjoyed yourself at the shows.
