| Lilly's new little kitty sister. Help!!! Today my boyfriend and I went to the animal shelter in a nearby town and adopted a 7-8 week old kitten, who we named Chloe. Lilly hasn't gotten to meet her yet... the reason why is because Chloe was/is? covered in fleas and flea dirt. While we were still at the shelter they put Advantage on her but used only like a TEENY TINY amount out of a syringe, they didn't put the whole thing on her I'd say because she's so young who knows! I noticed the flea dirt though and I think even the woman did because she was like "well if she has fleas then flea dirt will fall off" and as soon as she ruffled Chloe's fur you could see the flea dirt on the paper! As soon as we left the shelter we took her to our vet for her exam and one of the vaccines. He took a stool sample which came back with no worms. I asked them about the fleas and told him what the shelter did about it and reminded him that I have Lilly and he gave Chloe a Capstar pill. We went to Wal-mart to get some toys and everything then headed home which gave the pill plenty of time to work. Took her out of her pet taxi and there were 5-6 fleas dead in the bottom on the newspaper. I had him come in the back door with her so we could give her a bath. We called the vet and they said the best bet would be to use baby shampoo as it wouldn't be as harsh on washing off the Advantage. I really wasn't worried about the Advantage washing off as I was about getting all the fleas off before they got to other places in our house. I bathed her 2 times, the 1st time it was ridiculous, I'm talking 20+ fleas in the water. Then we found 5-6 in the towel while drying her off so I wanted to bathe her again. The 2nd time, there was like 1 or 2 in the water then like 3-4 in the towel. Some looked dead and some I really couldn't tell. She's now dry, in her crate on a big comfy towel in the bathroom with some water. Our bathroom is in the back of the house and the only way I knew to TRY and keep the fleas away from Lilly. Now, my question to all of my lovely friends on YorkieTalk... what do I do? Is there anything else I should do? I'm looking for some insight to this problem. We tried to call the shelter when we got home and they were already closed. Are animals usually infested with fleas when you adopt them from shelters? That's kind of disturbing how there are other animals there that are most likely infested with fleas too. Help YorkieTalkers!!

| well, IMO- animals from a shelter should not be covered in fleas. but we all know how easy it is to get them! Is your puppy on flea treatment??

They put Revolution on Lilly when she went to the vet around June 24th. I think I have some Revolution somewhere though. I'll definitely put it on her if I can find it as I'm sure it's been far too long for it to still be working .

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Some kitties I adopted from the shelter had fleas...and some did not. Do NOT use dog flea preventative on a cat.

| I would get kitty's fleas under control before introducing to your puppy. Congrats on the new arrival! You are a great kitty mom!

| I'm not using dog flea preventative on a cat and wouldn't dare do so. I read the instructions before I use anything, thanks for the heads up though!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I thought the revolution was a dog product....that's why I mentioned it. You could probably introduce them tonight...you've killed all the fleas she had. Tomorrow I'd try to get her some flea preventative. When my yorkies were smaller...I used a half of the dose. You could probably use a third on her. Be prepared...Lilly will probably love kitty...and lit' kee....is gonna hunch up and hiss. It's quite comical. I've had more success introducing a kitten to the dog...than my puppies to my cats though.

Senior Yorkie Talker | make sure that your puppy doesnt lick her flea med.....Well i noticed that you washed her so i dont think it will hurt. I heard it was dangerous if the cat or dog licked the opposing one's flea meds! but i dont know how accurate this is |

Haha, you're right! We tried introducing them and Chloe hissed at Lilly 2 or 3 times then tooted so I think we scared her a little too much ! We put her back in the bathroom and fed her then put her in the crate. Is there any way we could help her potty? She hasn't pottied any since we've been home. I'm still not sure if we've gotten all the fleas... whenever we took her out to eat there was 3 fleas on her towel, I couldn't tell if they were dead or what... we washed them down the sink though. Also, whenever the vet took a stool sample he had to try twice and now her bumhole looks kind of ew like it's swollen or something and she keeps letting off really bad stinkies, could something be wrong? You seem like you know a bit about cats so sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this!

She has access to her litter box right? She'll go. It's all new to her there...if she's tooting...it's working it's way down. Milk sometimes soften their stools...if you think her bum is swollen..that may make it easier for her. Once she learns where her litter box is located....potty training is DONE. It's that easy. She doesn't need milk...although some give their cats it. Mine all drink or drank just water. I treat them with frontline flea preventative...no problems with fleas as long as I've been using that. If she isn't spayed...have it done. It's not fun to have a boatload of tom cats howling at your windows....and they do literally howl. I've had gosh... 9 kitties in my life time. I loved cats before I ever had dogs. Wait til she is walking, walking...then suddenly she'll feel the need to hunch up and pounce. It is hysterical. One dog I had...when I brought home a kitten...decided she was the kitten's mama. She carried him everywhere...let him nurse...even though there was nothing to nurse ON...her loved her kitty baby.

| It may be worthwhile to get some household flea spray from the vets. These spays usually last upto 6 months and take care of any eggs too! They can be quite expensive but if you only need 1-2 tins a year they're very economical. No matter how hard you try to keep them in, most cats tend to roam and I know its a long way off yet but if your house is already treated then you don't need to worry about it! Congrats by the way, I love Kittys and have had a few and probably will again in the future

How do the sprays work? Are the animals allowed to be around them or what? I HATE foggers because they make a disgusting mess and I think they're just so unsafe. I'm going to try my hardest and if it's in my power she won't be outside. My mom's cat hardly ever goes out and if he does he's on a leash with a harness .

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Congratulations!! If you haven't given Lily her Revolution in over a month I would definatley do that so she will be protected. Hopefully the fleas are all gone now.
