| Q about ,my "KittY" Well Ive had Kitty for about 2 years now. she is an indoors only animal. My question is "How often do you clip the nails of an indoors cat?" To be honest I hadnt even looked at her nails until 2 days ago and they are really thick except a little hook on the end. I feel so horrible because I havent trimmed them ever. She is always scratching them on everything in the house and I never snapped maybe to trim them. Your thoughts please..... |

| since you have never done it before, clipping the hook would be a good way to start. i have a feeling it will be a struggle since hes not used to it! lol. my cat tommy just laws quietly while i clip them cause ive been doing it since he was a kitten. but they have a quick also in their nails, just like dogs. its usually farther back than a dogs so start out by cliping the point off. in a week or two you should be able to clip a little more off. i keep tommy's pretty short since he likes to scratch...everything. i didnt care as much before but i also like them short so that he doesnt hurt dexter by accident. they play fight a lot and a cat claw to the eye would be awful. when i lived with a roomate years ago who had a lab i left tommy's nails long to defend himself. one time he was giving the lab a smack accross the face and his claw got stuck in the labs lip. the lab started crying and running around the house draging the cat around by the lip! ive kept the nails short ever since. |

| Cats nails don't grow long the way dogs do, they shed in layers... thats why they "claw" and scratch everything... to try and knock off the layers.. Sometimes when you cut them you will see a whole layer of nail sheer off, it FREAKED me out! I was like, OMG! I Broke the nail!!!!! But its just a layer shedding off... if they don't have a means to aggitate the nails they cant naturally shed those layers and their nails can get pretty gross... Hence tearing up your doorways and expencive furniture! LOL

| Totally normal... "brittle and flakey" Its just the shedding of kitty's old nails... Gross but normal.. whats not normal is that kitty is supposed to do this herself, lol A sisel or natural tree with bark scratching post will help with that! Spike one with catnip and she should make friends with it!
