| Anyone else have a parent/teacher conference lately? I had conferences for both of my girls tonight. My oldest is in 2nd grade, my youngest is in Kindergarten. They're both doing great but on the report card for my youngest it had all of the letters both cap & lowercase and it was marked which ones they recognize and which ones they know the sound for. Mine doesn't recognize every letter yet, but she knows more than were marked. She can spell, read and write her sisters name which is Abby so I know she knows the letter "A" yet it was marked that she didn't know it along w/ a couple of others that I know she knows. Then for being able to say what letter goes w/ what sound she only had two letters marked. I KNOW that's wrong, it didn't even have the T marked which is what her name starts with. She's known what a T sounds like for a few years. I went through the letters with her at home before I went and she knew a lot that weren't marked. I thought it was a little funny considering she had J marked that she knows the sound and she's recognized that sound at home. I mentioned to the teacher that at home she actually knows a lot of the sounds & can tell me what letter goes w/ the sound and that she recognizes more letters than were marked. I'm not doubting that she missed some on the day that they tested them on it, I just wanted to make the teacher aware that she does know more than those that were marked. I was thinking maybe the teacher might need to push her a little more or maybe my daughter gets shy when she's being tested one on one. I had this with my older daughter too. Instead of giving me any kind of reason as to why she would be able to do more at home than when tested at school the teacher said that based on what she's seen she would be surprised if Tori can actually recognize those at home. I was shocked. I didn't imply that she knows all of them or that she always gets them all right, but she definitely knows more than was marked. Grr...she could at least be open to the idea that Tori knows some more instead of implying that I was lying. My husband wasn't able to attend the conference and he was surprised when I told him what she said...he's so mellow that things don't usually bother him. Oh well, besides that everything is going as expected. My 2nd grader needs to work on her handwriting more but her daddy and I both have bad handwriting so I'm not expecting miracles with that one. I hate focusing on the one thing that's not as good as I feel it should be. I end up feeling like I'm failing as a parent when I know I do a good job...not perfect but better than a lot of people that I know. Also, I'm not bashing the teacher because she is really great and does a great job with the kids. Anyone else have a conference lately? Did you agree w/ everything or did you feel there were some areas that your teacher could improve on? Just wondering.

| Been there, felt your pain! lol I am a teacher myself, and I raised two boys, so I've been on both sides of the conference table. Just choose your battles, praise effort and progress and try to keep your perspective. Easier said than done I know. I'll never forget my oldest boy's first parent conference. I was only in my second year of teaching, and I thought I had done a great job preparing him. Unfortunately, I left the conference feeling like a failure because he couldn't use scissors, and he was coloring outside the lines. I cried on the car trip home. I also had to tell my husband that they wanted to test him for special ed. I was devastated. The next day he went up to school and spoke to her. It turned out that the teacher thought he had a learning disability because he didn't know what an iron was! Might that have been because I don't IRON anything?? LMAO!! The poor child had never seen one! I also encouraged him to color his own pictures, so he had never seen paper with lines to follow (like a coloring book). He had also given the cat a trim with our scissors, so he was not allowed to use them after that. How was I to know that I had RUINED his chances for a quality education?? NOT....he graduated in the top 10%, was student council president, and was in honors classes. All I can say is....don't sweat the small stuff. It will all work out.

| im not a parent, im a student. last year i had a teacher that despised me ! im not kidding. she hated and was tougher on all the smart students! well, she was my laguage arts teacher. i have to tell you, i dont get absolute straight A's (some B's). well, one day we were writing this persuasive essay that i was confident in. when i got it back, i got a 5/6 (low A) and i was content. a few days later, i forgot about it and my parents checked the school website (they can see my grades on it) and it showed up that i got a 2/6 !! (i forgot that it was a mistake from the other essay grade) . my parents just talked to me about it (no yelling, because this is unlike me) . i KNEW that i would never get such a low grade, but it was right there on the screen. So, the next week was a parent teacher conference, and i was allowed to go in with them. my mom brought it up to my meaannn teacher and she said "its just that she failed. i cannot give her a retake. its a failure essay" . i was amazed that she would say this !! then, i remembered something . without telling anyone anything, i went to my in class writing folder. i pulled out the essay that i got a 5 on. she made a mistake and wrote the wrong grade in the computer !! . this is the part that i HATED ... she said 'well, what's in the computer is done. theres nothing i can do about it. it will stay failing.' i was just in shock !! my parents just told me to forget about it and move on, but this just devistated me !! this was the only class that kept me out of principal's role. she also got me kicked out of the national honor's society because this isnt the only time she "made an error" typing in my grades !! i despise her !!! my parents werent mad though, because i got a good grade and i knew it all along ! i couldnt switch out because she was the only advanced english teacher :'[ . thank goodness im out of her class forever !!
