Our Blessings R Many Donating Member | Anyone Ever Have Gout? If anyone has ever had gout in their foot and big toe, what did you do on your own to get relief? Please tell me what you have done to help relieve the pain and swelling. I am not one to take meds so trying to cope with it myself. Patti |

| I haven't, but my grandmother and FIL both have had it. My grandmothers was actually caused by some blood pressure medicine she was on. The doctors gave her some medicine to help it and told her to stay away from acidy foods/drinks. My FIL did a more holistic (is that right) approach and got celery seeds (to sprinkle on food), cherry juice (from health food store) to drink and emu oil (to rub on it). I am not sure if this was all he used, but it worked!

| My husband gets it occasionally and his father & brother both get it also. They say it's extremely painful so I'm sorry you're going through this. My husband takes meds when he has a flare up but he also suggested drinking lots of water and no caffeine. His dad & brother were able to pinpoint the exact food that caused it for them, they quit eating that and don't have anymore problems. My husband hasn't found the magic food to eliminate, but he gets it less frequently now. If you decide to try the medicine send me a pm and I'll get you the names. Good luck!

Our Blessings R Many Donating Member | Thanks so much Jenn and SugarMama, I am not able to take meds, so I have to use alternative methods. It sure is painful, would put ice on it for swelling but it's too painful for anything to touch it Drinking lots of water and watching my diet for sure. Will do as you suggested here, thanks so much for posting back to me. |

| Patti...I'm so sorry you're having to deal with gout. I don't know much about it...only that it hurts something awful! Sending you hugs and get well wishes. I did a search on gout and sent you an email with some info. I feel so bad you've got that. Did you get over your cold yet? You've had too much to deal with lately. Bless your heart!

| Hi Patti! I have never dealt with gout personally, but I've done a lot of research on gout and purines and I think it's important to eliminate foods that are extremely high in purines such as yeast(baker's or brewer's), scallops, organ meats, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, etc. and really limit most foods high in purines. Foods high in purines include oatmeal, seafood, chicken, beef, legumes(lentils, beans, etc), and veggies like cauliflower, asparagus, spinach, green peas, and mushrooms. Good protein foods for people with gout are eggs, low fat dairy products, and tofu. Veggies except the ones listed above are also very good for you. Increase your water intake as well. A high protein, low-carb diet is very bad for people with gout. Here is a great link: http://www.uihealthcare.com/topics/b.../bone4246.html

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Believe it or not my 25 year old son has it and found out that it is hereditary from his father's side of the family. His doctor told him to eliminate red meats, etc. I hope to see other good links so that I can forward to him since he lives out of state.

| I hope the pain has subsided now. I've been thinking about you. I know when my husband has a flare up he can't even stand for the sheet to touch his foot at night. Let us know how it's doing and if any of the suggestions helped. My FIL finally figured out that beans (I can't remember if it was pinto or kidney beans) caused his gout to flare up. He cut those out of his diet and hasn't had another episode. My husband hasn't really figured out what causes his. We don't eat a lot of red meat, he wouldn't dream of eating organ meat, he doesn't eat many veggies at all, he's pretty picky and doesn't really eat anything on the list. He did start limiting his lunch meat consumption, but that was mainly due to the salt content.

| Most veggies are good. The only ones to avoid are the ones I listed above. Any kinds of beans can cause a flare-up.

Our Blessings R Many Donating Member | Thanks Everyone Everyone, My foot has slightly improved. I sure appreciate all your input. Maybe it was caused from my diet during the time the kids were home. I did eat a lot of baked beans and also made chilli so maybe it was the beans. This is so painful, has been for DollieDae too cause she is now having to learn to sleep not at the foot of my bed, she is not happy about that. You are all great, thanks for helping me in this time of need. Patti |
