Donating YT 11K Club Member | Bunny Rabbit Does anyone have a rabbit? My bf's niece's father got her a rabbit. IDK why because she is only 6 yrs old and really doesn't know how to take care of animals. Her mother is no better. She's had birds die cause she didn't feed them and me and my bf rehomed them to responsible owners that actually love them. We had to steal the remaining 2 left or else they prob. would have also died since we are not always at his house. Well anyway now she has a bunny and i have no idea what kind it is. It is small, kinda like Sophie's size. It's like tannish. It came with the rabbit food but what else can we give it? So far we fed it carrots and i gave it lettuce and it ate both. It's like we are the ones taking care of it(me and my bf) cause they've had it for about a week and already we found it with little food, no water, and poop all over it's cage today. His sister is so irresponsible! And then they also got her 2 turtles today, the nerve Anyway can anyone help that knows about rabbits? Thnx

| Yes I have 6 rabbits. Most important thing is to make sure its living in lots of clean fresh hay, a thick layer because they must eat lots of hay for fibre. Try to make sure she doesn't put sawdust in its cage as this can irritate their eyes. On top of the rabbit food and hay you can give treats of chopped up fruit and veg, not so much that they don't eat their hay though. Also don't give too much lettuce as it acts as a laxative. Keep the water bottle really clean, don't let it get green and change the water daily so it doesn't go stagnant. Depending on how big the cage/hutch is it will need cleaning out every few days, you can get rabbit litter trays for him/her to go in which helps to keep the cage clean. Also at pet stores they sell rabbit toys, things for them to chew on and play with which will help to keep him/her amused. They need to regularly have space to run about for excersise and to keep their nails worn down. Preferably on grass, also you can pick handfuls of grass and put them in the rabbits cage for him/her to eat. Hope that helps! |

Donating YT 11K Club Member | WOW You have 6?!? What kinds do you have? What kind of fruits can we feed it? I think it's a Cottontail rabbit after looking at pics on google but I'm not sure. I don't even know where he got it from. It will let us pet him/her but it won't let us pick it up. It doesn't bite it just gets kinda nervous. Also it's prob. from a petstore, im not 100% sure, but it looks like it. We let it out the cage and let it run in my bf's house but we only did that once cause it was hard to get it back in it's cage, it kept running away from us. It gets scared easily but when i feed it a carrot it will eat it out of our hand. We try not to bother it too much so it won't get scared and we don't know much about it either. Thanks so much for the info! I am going to try to take a pic of it.

| Most of mine are no particular breed/mixed breeds, apart from Harvey my harlequin dwarf lop. Fruits you can give apple, banana, strawberries, grapes, raisins. There isn't really any fruit that they can't have except for tomatoes as they are quite acidic. Just all in moderation. When you let it out try to coax it back to you with food so that you build the trust. Its probably a baby so will be nervous but in time should become more confident. Any idea wether its a boy or a girl, do you know how to check? |

Donating YT 11K Club Member | It's not a baby. His niece said it's a year old, i guess thats what her dad told her and it also doesn't look like a baby to me. I'm thinking it's always been in a cage it's whole life. I have no idea how to tell if it's a boy or a girl and i def. do not want to touch it lol. How do you tell? I will tell my bf to check

| Ok well if its a year old it shoulden't be hard to tell the sex, turn him/her upside down on your knee, use your forefinger and middle finger to press down gently on the vent area just in front of the anus. In both the doe and buck, the area will protrude. The doe (female) will display a slit or central line running up and down. Each side of the slit will be banded in pink. The buck (male) will present a pink tube with a pointed end that resembles a penis. |

| When we bought our current home there were BEAUTIFUL rabbits running everywhere!!!!! A lady had set her "pet" rabbits out and they had multiplied. I NEVER knew how fragile rabbits were!!!!! They can easily break their backs and they die. It is the saddest thing ever!!!! My son was holding his favorite bunny one day and it jumped from his arms....it broke its back. (he cried & cried) I rushed the bunny to the vet.....there was nothing they could do. The vet explained that rabbits have a very weak spines and they are so fragile. He said they can break their backs from jumping to fast and high. (that explains why I found a couple of rabbits laying limp in my yard....I guess they had broken their backs. I took the limp bunny's to the vet and their backs were broken. So sad!!!) So you can imagine how fragile they are when kids play with them. So please explain to the child how fragile the bunny is. But it sounds like no pet is safe in that house!!!
