| Important Info for Parents of Teens and PreTeens Info for Parents of Teens At a recent inservice program, I learned some information that I think parents need to be aware of also, so I thought I’d share. So here is some info for the sake of education. I do NOT claim to be an expert, I am just passing along info that surprised me. First, when buying back-to-school clothing be aware of two items: 1.) Sha Sha Shoes: These look like Doc Martins and some styles are even sold at retailers like Dillards. These shoes have a hidden compartment in the soles, and some teens are using these to hide drugs. http://www.daljeets.com/shashashoes.html 2.) Flip Flops: Some flip flops have a compartment in the sole that holds “liquids” and a bottle opener built into the bottom of the sole. http://www.ultrasecured.com/aquaeast/Detail.bok?no=1123 Drug Information: Ecstacy: This has been around awhile, but it is now being marketed to younger children by using cute little pictures on them such as bunnies, stars, Mitsubishi symbols, happy faces, Nike, lightning bolts, and others… This is also known as the “hug drug” because it enhances senses making you want to be touched. Cheese: This drug is usually a mixture of Tylenol and heroin. Some students pack it beneath their fingernails and can snort or chew it during class without being detected. Otherwise, it can be put almost anywhere, including in the battery compartment of cell phones. Strawberry Quick: This flavored methamphetamine is the newest form of this dangerous street drug. It appears that the flavor and color were added during the cooking process. This flavored version is popular among new users who snort it because the flavoring cuts down on the taste. Strawberry quick was designed for the younger crowd. Note: Symbolism….the latest symbol to identify someone using or selling drugs is the butterfly or angels/angel wings. (Of course not ALL butterflies or angels are symbols of this, but look carefully at boys who wear these or have these on backpacks, jackets, etc…) Inhalants: Just a reminder that this is the most commonly used drug for teenagers. It does NOT show up on drug screens or standard blood tests and is easy to find. Some items that have been used as inhalants….nail polish remover, whiteboard cleaner, model glue, helium, air freshener, dust spray, cooking spray, hair spray, deodorant spray, and even Reddi Whip to name a few. Just a head’s up for parents

| My philosophy is that I'd rather be informed, but I agree that it is scary. What bothers me is how it's being marketed to younger and younger kids. It's sad.

| My boys are 20 and 22, so I know what you mean. I also know that a lot of grandparents buy clothing and shoes...well, at least my parents helped out when my boys were younger.

| Wow...that's some interesting info! I would have never dreamed they'd be making shoes to hide things in. My kids are grown, but I've got grandsons...so far they're on the straight and narrow and I hope and pray it stays that way!

| I'm so glad my kids are out of school, I feel so bad for parents today..... I saw a guy on t.v. the other day demonstrating a back pack you can buy for your kids that is BULLET PROOF he said they could hold it in front of them as a shield....it was $175.00..... how sad...

| I have a 17 year old in school, and all this scares me to death. I believe she has a good head on her shoulders, but you just never know.
