| I thought DH's family was screwy I've posted a couple of times about my mother in law and how crazy she can be/is. The woman really is a few crayons short of a full box. Anyway, I was on the phone with my g-mother last night (she is 69 years old and has a belly button ring - she is a far cry from your average grandmother). I was telling her about going back to school. Did I get a congratulations? Nope. Did I get an, "I'm proud of you for finally grabbing life by the balls and taking control" ? Nope. I got a lecture on how I should concentrate more on my appearance and DH. I was informed I "have a problem" because I would rather go back to school than spend that money on plastic surgery. I am not kidding. If I called her and told her I was finally getting the breast implants she's been after me to get forever, or lipo, or even a brow lift, she'd throw me a friggin' party. Going back to school and doing something with my life means I "have a problem". *sigh*

| Oh I am definitely going back. Already enrolled in fact! I think it just kind of hurt that my family wasn't very supportive.

| That was so nice of her That's surprising coming from a woman of her generation, I thought the extreme focus on looks was happening in this generation.... That had to hurt...you think your finally doing something of substance, something more inner focused on the brain instead of outer focused on your looks and you get a slap in the kisser for it..... You really need to find people who or more positive, helpful, and encouraging, to share these things with.....there will probably be a lot of those kinds of friends in school for you....don't allow someone else destroy your dreams....their dream squashers... Now go get your things together, make sure you have all your stuff, walk p in there proud, and make some new friends in the process.... and do your homework ...... Congratulations girl!!... your on the right track, even if some people are clueless.....

| Good for you for going back to school. I went back to school at 40 for my nursing degree and it was the best decision I made.

| I think that it is WONDERFUL that you're going to college! Maybe she is an old fashioned woman who thinks that a wife's life should revolve around searching for a husband's missing socks and being a trophy wife. Let her know that women can have ambition and that looks fade but intelligence doesn't. You're doing the right thing and it will feel WONDERFUL once you've accomplished what you want to and doing what you want to do. I know people like your grandmother, she sounds a lot like my mom. No matter what you do, it really won't make them happy, they will just move on to something else to nag about. Just try to keep positive people in your life. Bottom line: It's YOUR life, do what makes YOU happy! |

| This is definitely the best decision I have ever made. I haven't even started yet and it has already done wonders for my self esteem. I LOVE school. I am one of those people who could make a career out of being a student. lol My grandma has ALWAYS been materialistic and obsessed w/looks. She believes in order to be successful in life you have to have a man. In order to get and keep a man you have to look good. Money, men, and good lucks are all that is important in life according to her. Luckily for me, my mom is nothing like that. She enjoys learning too. I'm glad I am like my mom. I mean, I'd like to have money, and I wouldn't mind losing the extra weight I've put on the past couple years. I'd just rather do it on my own and not have to depend on a man for it. No offense to my DH. I just need to know that should anything ever happen to him, I'll be able to take care of myself and the kidlets.

Grandma on the other hand apparently has been getting all her self worth by attaching herself to a man, her life must have been such an unhappy one for her, she desperately tried to get approval, acceptance, purpose, safety and security all her life through a man......men are here to share our lives not BE our lives...she must feel so empty now, when her looks fade she has nothing to fall back on...what a shame for her...you almost have to feel sorry for her rather than angry....

| That sounds like my in-laws!!! We cut off all contact with them over a year ago...they live like 2 blocks away. THey are really crazy though. It was for the best that we not allow them to see our children. My mother-in-law lets "crack heads" stay in her house just so she can get their foodstamp card!!!!!! I know some people will not agree with me for banning them from seeing my children, but I dont want my children around people like my in laws.
