| Ponds How deep do ponds need to be to safely keep Koi during the winter? We just put a pond in and I wonder if we need to make it deeper.

| I don't personally have a pond (though I'd love one), but my sister put one in a few years back. Her large part of the pond goes down to 3.5 feet and her Koi are fine in that part of the pond during the winters here in Michigan. Can we see photos when you are done with it, please?!

Donating YT 11K Club Member | I would say about 3 ft deep. All the ponds i've seen are about that deep.

| It does depend on the size of the fish, but even if it freezes, fish "hibernate" when it's cold and are very hardy. Goldfish and Koi, in particular, can get really big, so 3-4 ft would be definitely deep enough.

| How wide is it? From the pics, it looks like it might not be big enough for Koi, unless they're small ones. You can always get beautiful goldfish though; they get big and there's fan tailed ones and other types. You need to also be concerned about how warm the water might get in the warmer months, but with the waterfall (which is lovely, BTW), it should be ok. I had a tub type of water garden for years with a very large goldfish in it and it was only 2 feet deep (but there was only 1 fish in it too). You want to make sure that there's enough aeration to support the amount of fish you keep.

| how big is hte pond? its very pretty, would love to see pics of it with rocks we have a pond in our house and we have koi in it. The koi will grow to that the pond size will allow. but you won't be able to have too many in there, our pond has 9 koi in it right now and that's our limit. IF we put in more the extras died .. talk about natural selection and survival of the fitest.

| My sister has one and it's about 3 feet or so. You have to take MEGA good care of it, b/c it gets murky quick!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Two feet or deeper is right (from Kyle?) to keep fish in ponds from freezing. I don't like to take chances though and bring ours indoors for the worst of the winter. As long as we clean the filters weekly we don't have any problems with ours getting murky. We have 3 - 5" goldfish and 2 - 3" ones in the same pond. A general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon of water. Chachi your pond is very pretty, I love the slate type rocks you used. Here are pictures of the second pond we've put in here. The water hyacinths completely cover the hoses now.
