Default COMPUTER Question about Repairs

I'm SO tired of my computer running badly or freezing up and need to reformat my hard drive - which I've done probably 10 times by myself ...but now I have tons of work saved on it - not to mention thousands of pictures and don't want to take a chance and lose anything ...So - I was thinking of taking it in for repairs and letting someone do it for me -

HAS anyone ever done this ?

do they save all your stuff for you or do you have to do that yourself ?

was your experience good or bad ??

I'm VERY protective of all my files and depending on everyones replies - I just may do it myself but man - it's SO much work - so I'm wondering if it's better to take it to the professionals - I want it to run like it's brand new

Thank you !!!

I would not trust my files to anyone else. I would definitely back it up myself.

You have my condolences, I hate it when my comp is acting up.

Godd Luck,
We'll miss you while you're gone.

I know a computer tech who is wonderful! I will send him a copy of your question and give you his answer later today. Okay?

and LOL Jeanie - if I have to back them up my own self then I may as well format it myself - that's what I'm looking to avoid lol - it took me 2 solid days last time to transfer it all - reformat ...then put it all back on -

I use a USB Data link to move all my files from one computer to another - but I'd have to go borrow my dads again to do it this way - so if a Repair person can do all that for me - that's what I'm hoping for

I would back all of your files onto cds or another computer or hard drive. That way, incase something happens to your original hard drive you'll still have your files.

LOL I'd be busy for months if I used cd's - but I can do it to another computer....BUT .....if I had to back them all up myself then there's no point taking it in -

thank you for replying - it's helping.

I'm just trying to get out of 2 days of work and if I have to do the backing up myself then I can fix it without taking it in -

I'm sure they can do it for you but they'd probably charge you for it.

I prefer to do everything myself then if something goes to hell, I can't be mad at anyone else

that's me too - I've always done it myself - I think I've reformatted 10 times over the years with my old computer -but this computer I got a few years back I've only had to do once but that took 2 days straight working day AND night

Try getting one of those external hard drives and backing it up on there. Then when your computer is stable enough, you can slowly start burning the data on to some CDs

I have a newer compaq, I got it in 2006 for my birthday. And it's got a really easy reformat set up. It saves all my stuff, pictures, documents etc. And I've got most of my programs saved in there too. It takes about 4-6 hours to reformat then reload everything and I do it about twice a year. Much easier than my old computer that I had to save everything and it took forever.

V, i had a problem with my desktop, its a gateway pc, even though i have a warranty, they wanted me to reformat as i had a currupted Windows file, i did not trust myself and didn want to loose everything, they told me i could take it to Best Buy and have them clone my Hardrive first. I did that and i didn trust myself to reformat over the phone with gateway...so i had Best buy do it. Of course i paid for it ! To clone Hardrive they charged $ 100.00 but i did not loose a thing ! I just wrote some of the paid programs numbers down (antivirus, firewalls ex...) as i print them out once in a while so i could download them again. Its been running great since... good luck !

that's what I was looking for - COMPUSA also starts at 99 - and I wondered if they do this as part of the charges - I LOVE it right after I format my hard drive but these days with everything I have on my computer I'm really worried I'll lose something in the transfer if I do it myself - the last time I did lose some pictures -

thanks girl - it's worth 100 bucks to let someone do this I think - and I do have records of any pay programs - Hmmmm - now if I can just BE without a computer for 2 day I'm all set - do you remember how long it took them to do ? I have a Best Buy 10 minutes from me

Keep in mind that was only to clone , not reformat ! Unless they have a special going....its going to cost you twice as much to refomat and load everything back up. Was woth it to me as i didn want to deal with it ! Just talk to them first if thats what you want to do !

V, Since you save so much stuff that might be what is doing the freezing. I would suggest before you do anything at all to buy an external hard drive. They have some fairly inexpensive ones. Then move all your files and goodies over and then do the reformat. You can also run ad-aware to remove all the cookies and fishing software. That stuff really really gets in there and messes up your computer.

Good luck.
