Donating YT 11K Club Member | Help! Found a bird! What do I do? I know how to hand feed but I don't want to because it's a street bird and i don't want to bring it in my house, I don't want to get my babies sick. It's pouch is full like it was just fed but it was on a stoop all alone, I couldn't see any nest near it so i got cardboard and it's in a box in my hallway. I want to take it to a bird rescue or something but don't know of any here in NYC..does anyone know of any?

| I'm not sure. I just wanted to say good luck finding a bird rescue. We actually had a similar problem last year and we found a bird. A few wildlife rescues actually REFUSED to come and get it. A great "rescue," right?

| Does it have its feathers? If so it is probably trying to fly and the parents are nearby. I'd take it back outside and keep an eye on it. So no cats get it. |

| Was wondering how young it is...does it have feathers? I agree if it does, take it back outside...it's momma is probably looking for it.

Donating YT 11K Club Member | It doesn't have the full feathers yet, it's at that ugly stage where the feathers are growing. You can tell it's really young cause the eyes are alwayss closed

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | sorry to sound cruel but i would have left it alone. I think its just natures way. if the mother pushed it out of the nest and it doesn't make it then that's the way its supposed to be. I've worked in rescue for years and we'd get baby birds in all the time. Honestly alot of the bird rescues will not come and get the bird themselves. You have to drive it over there. Also, alot of the baby birds will die, even with care.

| Does it stand up? How are you keeping it in a box, do you have a lid on it? You could try feeding it some pieces of fruit or vegetables...Unless you want to go capture bugs and worms for it...but I think they have to be mushed up first. Good luck...fly away birdie...spread your wings and fly!!!

| I have to agree. Trying to rear a baby bird is darn near impossible...even for someone who knows what they are doing. And plus, they DO occasionally carry disease that dogs are susceptible to. Sadly, I would think the best option would be for you to let nature take it's course. (Keeping an eye out for cats, obviously, because that is not "nature." ) |

| When my Amanda was young, she had to rescue every turtle, bird, etc. that appeared "lost". Our vet was always more than willing to take the little waifs in and promised Mandy that he would do his best to "fix 'em up" and free them! Yes, he was pretty wonderful.

| If you really want to help and can invest some time.... wear gloves... get some pretty bird or exact hand feeding formula from the pet store, most will sell it, and it works just fine for wild birds, if not order it online its pretty cheap, no pun intended... lol and a hand feeding syringe, even a medicine syringe for children will work... you do NOT need an eye dropper, it will take you FOREVER AND A DAY! Do not play with or spend time with the bird.... Keep it in a large box, with news papers on the bottom... feed it only when the crop is low and let it FULLY empty at night..... keep a long sleeve shirt by its box that you can wear when you are feeding it and take it off when you are done... wash it often in hot water... toss the gloves with each feeding... from the sound of the feathers.... you should only have a couple weeks of feeding left.... The bird may or may not follow other birds and learn to eat on its own in the wild, but you will have given it a fighting chance..... if you release it now its doomed for sure. I have hand fed many birds from day one... if you need any help feel free to ask.
