| stained glass does anyone on here do stained glass? I am going to start this hobby soon. I showed my neighbor my interest while she was doing a rather large piece for her church. she gave me a beginner pattern, piece of glass and said I could use any of her equipment to try it out and see if I like doing it. has anyone tried this and not liked it for some reason? or do you do it and get hooked? I have done some research and found some patterns. most yorkie patterns you have to pay for. I found a program that is used to make your own pattern. has anyone tried that program? I guess I am asking for pros and cons of this hobby. anyone?

| I LOVE doing stained glass. Yorkie patterns are hard to find, so I make my own. Here's the first piece I ever did. It won a contest with CKE Publications and they put it in their Gallery Of Winners book. I created the pattern from a pic of my yorkie, Pixie. I have started on another piece that I created a pattern from a painting of a yorkie. (I did get the artist's permission to use it.)

| congrats on the pattern. what a compliment to your efforts! I thought I would try using one of my photo editing programs to make a pattern also. in your opinion , what do you think about these starter kits that they have for sale? is it best to have a grinder for not? my neighbor says not to buy anything before trying it first but I hate to borrow in case something happens to her equipment. I think I would rather buy my own. if something happens to hers I would be paying for something and still not have anything. I have seen a web page that says not to buy kits because it usually is kits put together with their overstock items. what do you think?

| I wouldn't hesitate to use your neighbor's stuff if she offers. You will need so much equipment that the investment will be a little steep. I usually buy top of the line equipment, because you do get what you pay for. It's a lot of money to invest, especially if you're not sure you're going to enjoy it. It's hard to break the equipment, so just make sure she shows you how to use it and it should be fine. Just listen to her instructions closely and never put a lot of pressure on the grinder. It doesn't take much pressure to smooth out the glass and it keeps the equipment from wearing out. So don't be in a hurry, take your time when grinding is what I'm trying to say, I guess. You could also look into a beginner's class at a stained glass shop. They will rent the more expensive tools for a real reasonable price, so you can try before you buy. I usually take a class for each type of stain glass (solder, lead, etc.), as each type uses different tools. Our teacher also let us use different qualities of the tools so you could decide which one you wanted and you could actually feel the differences between the more expensive tools and the lower cost ones. Be sure to show your patterns to your neighbor so she can tell you if they're going to work or not. It's not as simple as drawing a pattern and going with it. There's a lot of no-no's when building patterns. A good glasser will recognize when something won't work and she can help you fix any problems. I'm so excited for you! I hope you love it!

| here is my first piece. I was real pleased with it for a first one. I have dones 4 pieces so far. and am rearing to go with more. I have made a pattern of a yorkie also and will be trying the pattern out soon. like a true grandma, i need to make something for all the family first tho. my next one will be spiderman in red and blue water glass. ( for my grandson). I forgot to say....... I did go and get my own equipment since making my first one. I love doing stained glass. so much so that it gets in the way of all my chores. ( my husband says, " when are we going to eat something?"), lordy , I wish he would learn how to cook!!! it is interfering with my fun time. I have since put on a black patina.

| You are doing great! I haven't seen this thread before and I don't know why. ??? I love doing stained glass. I agree with all of the advice you've been given. Borrow equipment whenever you can until you know what you want. Save your glass scraps too! I do mosaics with those pieces and I love that too. My challenge now is how to do it with a puppy around. I worry about the glass fragments, chemicals, and lead. You also need to be careful to wash your hands before you touch them. So, I've been nervous about starting up again. I did one frame for my GE buddy gift. Now I have to get started again. Have fun!
