| Man Accused of Starving Cocker Spaniel OMG!! http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/05/21/sta....ap/index.html Man Accused of Starving Cocker Spaniel SHIRLEY, New York (AP) -- A man was accused of starving his 3-year-old cocker spaniel nearly to death and then taking the dog to an animal shelter and saying it wasn't his. William Winters, 31, of Mastic, New York, was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, punishable by up to four years in prison. He had brought the emaciated dog, Bailey, to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter in March and claimed he was a stray, but shelter workers were suspicious because of his condition, according to Suffolk County police. "They felt that, wherever it was found, it must have been close to where it lived," Detective Sgt. John Best said. Bailey "couldn't walk, couldn't lift its head, couldn't do anything," shelter director Charlie McGinley said Monday. Following an investigation, McGinley said, Winters admitted he owned the dog. Another dog on the property was in good health, he said. Bailey was rushed to an animal hospital and is now back at the shelter continuing his recovery. "He weighed 19 pounds, all ribs," when he first arrived, McGinley said. "He gained five pounds in the first few days. They had to hold up his head so he could eat." Bailey is now a robust 36 pounds, and should be available for adoption soon. It could not be determined if Winters had a lawyer; there was no listing for a William Winters in Mastic.

| I just saw that on the 5 o'clock news here. They didn't show a "before" picture but they showed a picture from today. He is a real beauty....nice and shiny black but you can still see where he's way too thin! I have no words to describe what I'd like to do to people who harm animals....NO WORDS!!!!

| Chain that sorry human to a tree and keep a hot sizzling "t" bone steak about 3" out of his reach..... Maybe when he is down to 19 lbs. he will understand the concept of how to treat an animal. |

NO dog lover ... forget DOG lover, no ANIMAL lover ... heck, not even a person that just LIKES animals could sit back and watch a dog starve to death. I bet that poor baby cried and begged for food every time that bastard fed his fat face. How could he just sit there and do nothing?

| That's heartbreaking ... I can't even think what that poor baby must have gone through!! My friend just got another rescue [Yorkie] that was actually rescued from an animal rescue ... she is so emaciated, you just can't imagine! grrrrrr We have heard that are more there!!! I suppose the only thing we can do is try to save them, one Yorkie at the time!! I am thankful that Bailey was saved and is on the road to good health and a wonderful forever home!!
