Default Anyone Have Veggie Garden

Hi YT'ers , I was wondering if any of you have a vegetable garden?
What all did you plant and how is it doing? I put one in am hoping it will do good. Someone told me to take newspapers that have been shredded and mix in with the soil that it helps keep moisture in, don't know about that. Has anyone done that? I did put in wood shavings. I also went to the xtreme and got the weed control roll from costco and put that down then cut out for each plant, whew, that seemed unending. I definately think it will help as I used it for years in flower beds. Three of the bare root cherry trees just didn't leaf out so I dug them up, got credit at store for them, nice to know they guarantee things for a year. Am amazed how well Jack's strawberry patch is doing that I put in for him. Would like to hear from others that are into veggie gardening too. Thanks, Patti

I don't plant myself...but I know my grandparents have a garden with tomatoes, lettuce, and some other vegetables and every time she has scraps like the peelings of apple, orange, banana, cucumber she has my grandfather bury it near the plant and its supposed to help it grow like fertilizer I guess. So basically if it was grown in a garden like fruit or vegetable you can take the scraps and just throw them back in the dirt.

We're in transitional housing while getting ready to build so I can't this year--BUT-------I did plant a big strawberry pot with berry plants and a bush tomato in the top as well as a 9 pot stacked holder that I have all my herbs and a pepper plant in on the back deck.

I should take pics.

I brought a bunch of stuff back from the NH house that I dug up to plant on the land---daisy's, coreopous, lilacs, lillies, irises a bleeding heart-------I have taken bits from every house I move from as they are plants that were given to me from my mom and she died 11 years ago.

It's like taking her with us.

I had great luck with Tomatoes ..Peppers and Green beans - they don't take long and you get delicious veggies on your plate every night when they come in. Can't help you on the other stuff because I'm no gardner but I really enjoyed my veggie garden. This year is was just too much work -

the girls loved running thru the plants so I put a little fence up...but have since taken it down (see 1st picture)

The 2nd pic is the Beans and tomatoes and peppers full grown ...and Miss Chanel tryin to be sneaky and get in there to do her BEAN STOMP

3rd pic is me trying to scare off Birds with Monkey-Crow...they LOVE tomatos and it really worked but drove the girls a bit nuts

We have a big garden every year, have too with 4 kids yet at home,we plant potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts, cantaluope.watermelon, green beans, cabbage, tomatoes, pumpkins, zuccinni, and sweet potatoes, cucumbers ,peppers, and if there is any room left I will find something else to put in.
I can and freeze alot,we get corn from the farmers so we do not have it in the garden, and we make ALOT of pickles.
Ours is 45 by 75 feet.We hardly have any weeds. That was from tilling and round up years ago and now not much weeds or grass come up at all.I do miracle grow once a month also, use the feeder that you can attach to your hose.
I also try to put marigolds around the border of the garden.
I have alot of flower beds also cant get enough of them.I use a small spray bottle of round up for the weeds in my flowers.I also miracle grow the flower beds every 2 weeks. We are just now planting our garden hope it does well this year.Good luck with yours.

I don't have a garden, but I sprinkle coffee grounds around outside our lanai. It keeps the ants from coming in.

Hey V - love your scarecrow, or should I say scaremonkey. I am going to start my 1st veggie garden in years today. My FIL had one about 15 yrs ago that took up his entire back yard. He had had a heart attack and triple bypass surgery. The Dr. told him to only come downstairs in the am and go up at nite. That was all the exercise he was to do or he would die. My FIL basically stuck out his tongue and worked that garden every day the entire summer. Not a weed in site. Everything you can imagine was growing in there. At least once a week when we came home from work there would be a huge box of goodies from the garden. The veggies were the tastiest I have ever had. I even learned to love some that I wouldn't touch before that. That garden kept him alive for a few more years. Mine is just going to be a small one, but I can't wait.

Thanks...and I swear the veggies will spoil you for store bought. There's nothing like home grown tomatoes....I made salsa - spagetti sause - pico di gallo and anything else I could with the tomatoes - and had enough to give away some too - just watch the birds !!

I wish I had room to. I guess it's just one of the negatives of living in the city.

Dont have any garden pics will have to take some this year.
Having a garden sure does cut down the grocery bill feeding these 4 boys. Here is a pic of one of my beds it does have a pond which is filled with fish frogs and lots of water plants.Tried to put some pics on here says they are too big and no time to resize them here today.
WIll try again.

We have a lot of acreage, but this is the first year I planted anything AND even with that, I just did them in big pots on my deck and patio...tomatoes, sweet peppers and hot peppers, garlic, lettuce, yellow squash, and strawberries. They have all been doing well. I will one day have a huge garden - in fact, last year, we looked into putting up a HUGE green house, but that didn't go very far...ha!

All my grandparents and family (well not all, but most) have nice big gardens that always seem to do well! My grandmother even planted peanuts this year to add to her huge variety.

Shredded newspapers do work well, as does cut up sponges (definitely good for house plants) and I want to say those small styrofoam "dots".

I use the Non-floating cedar mulch (it isn't suppose to wash away or move around in the heavy rains). I like cedar because it helps repel bugs. The pine bark nuggets were always a favorite until it drew in bugs...roaches, ants, even termites (yuck). There are some new products out, like shredded recycled plastics/tires that help retain water and repel bugs and keep weeds down. With most products like that (the "green" recycled, etc products) they are normally higher, but they are better, I guess.

Happy Gardening!!!
