Has anyone on here ever been a traveling nurse? Guys my job has been really bad lately with people either getting fired or quiting left and right. So I have been doing some checking on looking for a new job. As rumor has it that I am next on the chopping block. My youngest son graduates high school this year and will be going in the military this fall. So my husband and I have given serious thought to me becoming a traveling nurse. It all sounds so exciting and one of the recruiters that I have talked to says that they have positions in new mexico, hawaii, maryland and maine. There were more those are the only ones I can remember this early in the monring. Housing is totally paid for and critters and hubby are welcome to come with me. I was just curious to find out if anyone here had done it and if so did you like it/ not like it and why.

I've never traveled (I have an eight year old), but it's something I've always been interested in. I have several friends that have traveled and they LOVED it! Plus the money is really good, so you can either save up a lot of money or take a lot of time off, still maintaining the income you are used to...just a lot of flexibility. If you are happy where you are, though, I'd be leary of changing jobs based on a rumor. You know how healthcare jobs are...gossip, gossip, gossip. If they are losing so many nurses, I bet they might be willing to do what they need to retain you. I manage an ER and right now we are doing everything we can do to ensure nurse retention. Talk to someone before you make a drastic change based on rumor. Unless you just itching to go travel...then I say BON VOYAGE!!!

Nothing is definite yet we are still in the checking everything out phase. But the information that I am getting is great. I really don't usually believe a rumor, but the head boss is treating me like crap and either will not look me in the eye or smarts off to me. So I really beileve that something is going to happen. The traveling part sounds so nice, probably the only chance we have of seeing the world. The lowest paid assignment they have still pays more than what I am making, and the only expense we would have would be our food and the pet deposit on the apt. They pay for everything else.

| I haven't worked as a traveling nurse, but I have worked WITH traveling nurses. They always seem to love their job! The only hard part is that with every assignment, you are in orientation. Duh! I guess if you don't mind being the new kid on the block - then it would be just fine! I hope you find out more about it. Does the agency have any employees that you could talk with? What about health insurance? If I remember correctly, your hubby has some health problems...... Also, he would have to find new docs in each new place - would that be a problem? Good luck with everything!

Yes it does sound very exciting. Right now we are still in the first phases. I have actually picked out 2-3 that I am leaning more too. Health insurance is completly free after 30 days. Hubby has his own insurance ( medicare) so mine would only be a supplement for him. I only have to pay a very small price for his part if I carry him on mine. His doctor has told us to let him know where we are going and he will find him a md there. But we are planning on coming home for 2 weeks after each assignment so that he can go to the doctor and such. I am not for sure who is more excited him or me. There are employees that you can talk to but I have not got that far yet. As far as facilities, I have worked in some pretty bad ones here in Indiana and have been told that I can get a company profile of each place that I am looking at before I choose. I also get a profile of apts to help me choose where to stay.
