Default Am I being a *****?

My neighbor has a big dog who lunges at Max, barks, goes for him, and basically wants to hurt him. I know this woman for a long time. She is recently divorced, wears braces on her legs for a neurological disorder, lost her last dog not too long ago, rescued this one, and is, in general, not really on the same planet as the rest of us. She tries to hold her dog back when he sees Max, but really can't handle him because he's stronger than her. She told me her schedule when she walks him so that we could avoid problems. I got annoyed, bur kept quiet. What if Max and I are outside at those times? I always avoid them and pick Max up whenever they are outside together.

Last week, she saw me walking Max and basically asked me when I would be finished walking him because her dog really needed to go out. I like to take Max on nice leisurely walks usually around the block so I told her I would be out of her way. Of course, we couldn't come home until she was finished.
I saw her again a couple of days ago and she did the same thing, but got bossy and annoying about it. I told myself that I should keep quiet because she is trying to keep my dog from getting hurt. BUT, I was annoyed. I saw her later and asked her nicely if she had thought about getting her dog socialized. He doesn't like other male dogs. She got super defensive and highly insulted. I said I wasn't trying to offend her - it would be nice for our dogs to play together and her dog would be happier if he was socialized. She tried to play the victim by claiming that he's a rescue dog. She started to really try to have an argument with me because she claims her dog is perfectly trained, mine barks too, blah, blah, blah.

I got away from her asap and have very mixed feelings about the the whole issue. She's a little "off," and she does try to make sure that Max doesn't get hurt, but I don't see why Max and I should have to be afraid to be out because she doesn't understand that she has to have her dog trained.

Sorry thus is so long, l but I needed to vent and need your opinions...

Thanks,

Judy

that's tough.. i'm a bit confused tho... is there only one street for you to walk max on?? are you unable to go on the other side of the street and avoid this dog completely?? can you turn around if you see him coming and walk the other way?? it sounds like whereever you are walking is very small and you'd run into him all the time.. what about bringing max to a park?? about a month ago we brought Layla to a large park in a town about 20 min ago and she LOVED it!! she investigated and saw birds and squirrels and other dogs.. it was so great! i'd avoid her like the plague.. you clearly arne't dealing with a full deck of cards so just do your own thing.. i bet max would love to investigage new places!

Tough one. I have to give the lady credit though...she recognizes the problem and is at least being somewhat considerate by trying to keep her dog in when you are out with Max. She's not obligated to even make that effort, really... I would just walk Max somewhere else or continue trying to cooperate and not go out at the same time. I can however see why that would be bothersome for you though...

If we do cross the street or walk down the block, the other dog still lunges for Max and I don't think my neighbor can control him. It is a small area because in Brooklyn, the blocks are large squares so until I turn a corner, Max is still visible.

I take him on a leisurely walk every day if possible, usually around the block. He goes on paper, but we like our walk and he needs the exercise, and to be out. There is no park within walking space and once you get a parking spot in NYC, you don't move the car unless you have to! He would love a park. He rolls around in the grass on some of the lawns on the street.

The truth is, I know myself - I can be a ***** and I'm going to tell this woman that she's going to have to work around our schedule. I honestly have no interest in her dog walking issues and for all I care, her dog can pee in the house if she can't figure it out. She just got too bossy about it. Since my daughter was diagnosed with MS, my compassion level for nonsense has reached a new low.

She never walked her last dog. She would take him out into the hall with a bucket, hold his rocket with her hand, and aim it in the bucket where he would pee. The first time I saw that, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't hallucinating! I don't even want to know how she dealt with poop.

Ok at first I thought well she is making an effort to deal with keeping both you and her happy and safe. After reading the holding the rocket thingy, I have to say its best for you to just do the best you can in this situation. She might not be all there and perhaps its best not to rock the boat. I would just pick up my dog and hold him till im out of sight of her dog if need be. Since you say you cant or dont really have good places to park a car and spaces are limited I think i would compromise and hold him till I got where it was safer to walk him. I always opt for non-confrontational dealings whenever possible especially since its a neighbor who may not be the easiest to get along with it sound like.

Yeah, she's in another reality zone than the rest of us. I do think she is trying in her wacko way, to keep Max safe. It just would never occur to her that it shouldn't be entirely about her convenience because she's a wack job.

It is what it is though and I'll make sure my little one is not hurt or scared in any way.

I'll let you know. Anyway, as the weather warms up, moving my car a few times week to go to a park is fine. There are off peak hours when parking is available in certain neighborhoods.

That bucket thing was a sight to see, let me tell you! It was so surreal that even the poor dog looked embarrassed.

I live in Brooklyn too and there are a few nut jobs by me. I feel your pain. Next time she comes at you with an attitude, ask her why YOU should have to change your walking routine because HER dog has aggression issues!! It's HER problem, not yours. You shouldn't have to work around ANY schedule!

I understand she's trying to be nice and look out for Max but really what she is doing is limiting you. So now you basically can only walk Max at certain times (when her dog is not out), right? Well, what if you are going out and you need to walk Max before you leave and it's at the same time she walks her dog? Do you just not walk Max and make him stay inside? That would be unfair! I think this lady needs a reality check ... I would never agree to what she wants!

Hey, we should have a puppy play date ... being we're both from Brooklyn.

Where are you in Brooklyn? I'm in Borough Park. We can't have a playdate on my block though - We might interfere with wacko neighbor's schedule.

That has to be rough on your nerves and stress can lead to health problems. You have ask nicely and it doesn't work. I would stay clear of her and her dog as much as possible.
