I had a opossum problem big time. they would have babies and climb onto my deck out side our bedroom.(second floor). they would run on the deck all night long. they would get on our roof (cedar shake) and run all night long. they chewed up my spark plug wires and I had to replace them.
I did some research and found out that they hate garlic. so i took about 6 garlic and crushed each clove and threw them all on the deck and the base of the house. I was so surprised.... from that moment on I have not seen or heard any...none at all. every now and then I will still throw garlic around the base of the house. just in case it wards off any other kind of critter. we have the armadilla around the yard too. all kinds of critters here.
try it i think you will find it works good. and cheap too!

Good Lordy! My (then) 58 year old mom had a possum on her back porch eating the dog food. She was so scared of it (a recent widow at the time) that she commenced to hitting it with a stick she had in the house. After about 3 swats, the thing killed over. Of course, she was so distraut that she called me (I lived 30 mintues away) and was so upset. She thought she had killed it.

By the time we got off the phone, the possum was gone. It had tricked her and "played possum". Anywho...back to your original question. Don't have any suggestions for you...but I can give you my mom's phone number! LOL

eeeek!!! Call your local animal control force.

This reminds me of two winters ago. my Rusty was out back and it was dark out. he started growling and barking like a mad man. I went to see what his problem was, and there was nothing there. just a few piles of snow on the ground, right? So he's still going crazy. So we go and get the flash light and see a freaky looking thing sitting under the basketball net! I got Rusty inside and my dad called the animal control. by the time they got there it was gone, but we thought it was dead because it had played possum when my dog started barking at it.

Make sure you don't have any food outside.. that could possibly be why he is sticking around.

This is a good idea! Since the possum the OP saw had a huge bulge, she could have been looking for a place to have her babies! YIKES! Even babies aren't cute!
