| Stiff neck Anybody have any idea? I woke up a week ago last Saturday with a stiff neck. It's on my left side and hurts like a ($#&(wq*&#@$(*&#. I can't turn my head to the left. If I press on the muscle it feels better. I was pressing on it yesterday and something popped, like when you have a tight muscle and you release the pressure. I've been taking Ibuprofen, but nothing works. I've used icy hot and icy hot patches and they don't help. I put some heat on it the other day and that made it worse. It's really bad when I sleep or should I say try to sleep. Any ideas? The doctor is out because I'm private pay and it's just not in my budget right now.

| Hmm, you probably slept on it wrong, but that'll usually go away in a day or so. I would suggest to put a hot pad on your neck to ease the pain. Maybe rub in some icy hot. Feel better!

| I would try icing it. I have always been a fan of icing over heat. I would also use Motrin - the prescription variety is 800mg which would be 4 OTC. Hope it feels better soon.

Really? I was taught ice for swelling, cool/tempid for burns, hot for muscle pains. Hey, but whatever works for you, right?

| Usually they say ice the first 2-3 days and then heat after that. Some also suggest alternating ice and heat -- 20 minutes on and then the other. I have about 10 years experience with neck/back pain. I had surgery once due to a severely herniated disk and have turned down subsequent offers for more surgeries. Ice seems to help me the best -- heat is soothing and feels good while you are using it, but the relief from ice actually lasts a while. When the pain subsides a little I would "google" the neck pain you are experiencing and see if there are some stretching exercises to help. If we strengthen the muscles, they are not so susceptible to injury. Try gently stretching the neck from side to side and front to back. Maybe some very slow neck rolls. Might even see if someone will give you a very gentle massage. If you can, see if there is a low price medial clinic around. We had one open in town that has a sign out front -- Office Visits $40 -- can't beat that! It would be good to rule out any serious injury that might get worse without care. Good luck -- neck pain is no fun!!

| Bless your heart .... that stinks! My Patrick has really bad neck pain [due to being a wrestler in high school] and we have tried everything out there. The best relief for him are "Tiger Balm Patches". I believe he found them at Wal-Mart. It stops the pain and actually causes it to go away. Good luck ... I know there is nothing worse than back/neck pain!

| Thanks guys. I'll try the tiger balm because I think I have some at home from when my daughter was in Taekwondo.

I still swear by ice as well. I know first aid says ice only during the first 24 hours, but I've always found ice not only feels better on the area, but really reduces swelling and the after effects are longer lasting. Hope you start to feel better soon.
