| looking for group projects/comm. service ideas Hi all! Has you may or may not know, my daughter and I are in several groups (with kids from elem - high school). We are having a meeting to try to plan out the next few months in our groups. One group is 10 kids, one is 15 kids and one is 24 kids, various ages (up to 17), and we go over just about everything with these kids. I am in need of ideas and suggestions and thought YT would be the perfect place to get some!! I am looking for the following: 1) fun games to play (like getting to know you, ice breakers, just plain fun play for a group) 2) community service projects a group can do or volunteer for (this will be good for kids to learn from, to help with college transcripts, scholarships, etc) *speaking of scholarships: any ideas of places that offer scholarships for younger kids - websites, stores, etc? I know there are several out there that offer to younger kids (like essays, art, etc). Anything would be helpful. 3) arts and crafts ideas for the group to do during meeting time 4) fun snack/food ideas (trying to do something different then just cookies, chips, soda) 5) fun presentation style ideas (trying to get the kids to learn to speak in front of a group - even though our groups are small - but something where they can get up front of us and show us something (pictures, dogs, etc). Thanks in advance! I look forward to hearing all the ideas.....

Donating YT 30K Club Member | How about going to a Senior Citizen's building and offering assistance to read or small chores like getting newspapers, taking garbage. For projects the fleece knotted blankets are easy to make, so easy I can make them. Then they could donate to a homeless shelter, or make small ones for children in domestic abuse shelters or animal shelters. How wonderful for you to do this and your children.

| Those are good, thanks Patti! I never even thought about doing the fleece blankets!!! My daughter had taken a class (in our homeschool group) call Ugly Quilts, where the girls just stitched together scrap material and tacked them together; those were donated to our local homeless shelter, it was fun and a good project, but not for our other groups - we need something like your idea of fleece blankets that only take our meeting time to get done - the quilts took several days (we only had class twice a month). I like the nursing home idea, too! I was trying to come up with something relating to animals too, but most shelters will only let younger kids (under 18) donate items, not volunteer their time (safety issues, where you have to sign a form).

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I can make a small fleece knotted blanket in 30 minutes and a large one in an 1 1/2. But I'm older and slower so kids should be able to do some pretty quickly. Good luck!

| Thanks Patti! I think that would be a great craft idea....and there are so many different fleece patterns out there; so each child will be able to express themselves in their blankets (if they make one for themselves too). I will throw this idea out there also, for a craft we could do for a nursing home, homeless shelter and animal shelter too. In light of sounding dumb , how many yards (or what measurements) do you use for an adult size blanket? And for a small one? Thanks so much!

| My school has this "stuff a bus" drive where people donate enough clothing or canned foods to stuff a bus then they drive it to wherever they were donating it to. but i think a bus may be too expensive to rent so maybe stuff a car? i thought it was cute.

| For presentation ideas I would tell them to maybe do a speech on a favorite item, hobby, past time, etc.. This way you get to know about them and a lil something about their interests. I remember we one time we had to do a speech about what kind of buisness we would open if we had the chance and why. It was pretty fun and creative because we could get as creative as we wanted. For animal shelters, even if they cant physically donate their time in the shelters, doing some sort of food drive or even newspapers, toys, money etc. Would be a huge help as the shelters are always in need of these things. You could also ask the kids to ask everyone they know families friends nieghbors and see if anyone is getting rid of old blankets, sheets, and towels for homeless shelters or the homless. A toy drive for children in hospitals, also books for the kids in hospitals or even schools that are in need of them. I hope I was able to help some!! |
