| Son getting a new dog My Mom has offered to get my youngest son who is 18 a dog all of his own. He gets to pick the breed and everything. Now poor soul is driving himself crazy trying to figure out what he wants. He knows he wants something short haired and I think he has it narrowed down to a boston terrier, chi or doxen. He is afraid that the chi will be too small and will get hurt by my yorkies playing. Any ideas anyone. We spent the day searching shelters but none around here are small enough. If anyone has any suggestions of what breed between the three would be best he would appreciate the help. The chi's that we called about they said should only get about 4-5 pounds full grown and Haylee and Graff play so rough. |

| My nieces had a boston terrier once. They seem to have a lot of breathing difficulties from what I've seen. That's about all I can remember for now, except that he seemed to destroy a lot of valuable things. What about a rat terrier? Just a thought.

| I just thought of what I would think would be perfect and that's a Westie. Interested? Here is what they look like: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/...?petid=7051237 Isn't he cute? Of course, this breed may be too big. I don't know. Information on West Highland White Terrier (i.e. Westie) Description This sturdy, hardy, compact little terrier has a two inch all white coat that is uncurled with a soft, dense undercoat. They have bright, dark, deep-set eyes with a penetrating gaze. The ears are small, pointed and erect, giving the animal an alert ready-for-anything look. The tail is carried jauntily, is about 5-6 inches (12½-15cm.) long and should not be docked. It has a deep chest and muscular limbs. The Westie has a short, closely fitted jaw with scissors bite, a pronounced stop, and slightly convex skull. Temperament West Highland White Terriers are described in the standard as being "possessed of no small amount of self-esteem with a varminty appearance." This game and hardy little Terrier is easy to train. They are fairly friendly toward strangers and get along well with behaved children. Westies may snap when irritated, but are not as willful as many of the other Terrier breeds. They are lively and extremely self-assured toward other dogs. Westies usually do not pick fights with other dogs, although some males are combative with other males. They may chase a cat for fun, but usually will not hurt it. Robust, friendly, cocky and spunky. Westies just love companionship. Despite its size, they make a very good watchdog. These little dogs are easy to travel with. The Westie likes to dig and bark. Height & Weight Height: Dogs 10-12 inches (25-30cm.) Bitches 9-11 inches (23-28cm.) Weight: Dogs 15-22 pounds (7-10kg.) Bitches 13-16 pounds (6-7kg.)) Health Problems Most are fairly healthy. Some are prone to chronic skin problems, Perthe's disease (hip problems), hernias, liver disease, and jawbone calcification. Living Conditions Suitable for people in towns and cities as well as in the country. They are very active indoors and will do okay without a yard. Exercise These dogs enjoy a regular walk or sessions of play in the park, but won't be too upset if they miss a day. Life Expectancy About 15 or more years. Grooming The harsh, straight, short-haired double coat is fairly easy to groom and sheds little to no hair. Simply brush regularly with a stiff bristle brush. Brushing should keep the coat clean, so bathe only when necessary. Trim around the ears and eyes with blunt-nosed scissors. The whole coat should be trimmed about every four months and stripped twice a year. Origin In the middle of the nineteenth century, it happened that the breeder of the Cairn Terrier in the country of Argyll, Scotland got some white pups in his litters. Those pups were selected and bred to obtain the West Highland White Terrier, which is simply a white Cairn. Westies were originally bred for controlling the population of rats, fox, otter and other vermin. This charming terrier is now mostly a companion dog.

| My boyfriend's sister has a boston terrier and they have a ton of health problems from what she's told us. Chihuahuas will play right along if your pups play rough. A friend of mine has a longhaired chi and he keeps up with their black lab!

| So maybe a chi would be the way for him to go then. There are two litters that we called about yesterday. One litter is 125 and the other is 250. I have never had one before so not for sure if that price range is correct. I will give him this info when he gets up. This is supposed to be lifting his spirits and is causing him so much stress cause he can't decide which breed would be better. |

| Does anyone here have any experience with doxies? Just about the only thing I can find online that they might have problems with is their backs if they become overweight. There is also a couple of litters around here of those for 200. |

| IMO, you can't find a more wonderful pet (other than a Yorkie, of course!) than a Dachsund (SP?). But then, I don't know anything about the other two breeds. Yes, Dachsunds can have back problems if they're overweight, but all dogs are going to have one problem or another if they're overweight. They're very clean (rarely have an odor), are relatively easy to train, and have great personalities. Good luck to your son! |

| Have you visited a couple litters of each breed? Maybe that would be good so that you can get an idea for each breeds temprament/personalities. Plus, playing with new puppies is always a joy!

| I have had Boston Terriers all my life and not one of them ever had health problems. They were strictly inside dogs and lived to be healthy old pups... My Boston now, T-Bone is 14 years old. He had old age problems now but nothing that any dog would have. Boston's are the greatest personalities and are super fun, especially for "boys".. My TBone will play ball until he falls over..... that would be my suggestion...

| Well we welcomed "Bubba" to our home yesterday. He is a boston terrier puppy that has to be one of the cutest fellas I have seen. Mama and Daddy were both on site and friendly as can be. Puppies and parents looked really healthy and really loved. Poor mama dog had 7 puppies. 6 boys and a girl. We did check out a litter of each breed and this particular litter is the one that made my son's eyes sparkle. Don't ask me why he named him Bubba. But it does kind of fit. Haylee thinks he is pretty cool. Graff on the other hand wishes he would fall in the trash can and someone throw it out. But he will come around I am sure. |

| I know someone who has a chi and a yorkie she says the chi doesn't like the yorkie and wants to be the leader lol. That may also be because he was there first and its a territorial thing not really sure. Good luck! |

| Well Bubba is fitting in to our home perfectly. Well except that Graff still thinks we should put him in the trash. My hubby ask me yesterday if I influenced our son's decision on what to get. All I said was he didn't get a yorkie did he? Ha Ha. This little one is adorable though. Eating like a pig and only wakes up once during the night to go out. He has a playpen that he stays in in the living room if my hubby is the only one home so that he doesn't have to watch him so closely. |
