Default sharing your waitress tips?

Ok, I need to vent!! My daughter (16) is a car hop (waitress) for a rootbeer stand, it's just a summer job, something so she can earn some money for the summer. She makes $2.15 a hour plus she gets tips, when she started she was told she is to keep the 1st $20 then she has to split the rest. The other girls make min wage so my question is why should she have to split her tips with the others that make more money then her? Even if she makes $20 a night the girls are still taking her tips, like last night she said she made about $20 the whole night and the girl gave her $11 and took $9 from her. I got mad at my daughter cause I told her she is letting them take advantage of her, she wont say anything to them cause she is scared to, my daughter is not a out spoken person, so how can I get it across to her that this is not right of them. I told her she should talk to the owner but she wont. I want to call them myself but I think this is her job and she should handle it.
What would you all do??? Please I'm at my wits end with this, it has been going on all summer.

Wow, I am sorry for your daughter and shocked at this practice as well. Is this a common thing? I always tip 20% and I would like to think the tip goes to the person who served me. Why should I pay someone else who didn't even do anything for me? Working in the food service industry is a tough thing, especially for a young girl. I know it's just for the summer but i think your daughter should try to get a job somewhere else.

I agree with you 100%, the sad thing is she likes it there and looks forward to going, she gets to be outside and she has fun. But if I tip someone, I'm tipping that person, not the rest of the staff, specially who make more money then her. please keep your comments coming cause I'm going to show this to her and see if she will see the light lol

I have waited tables at many restaurants and tip sharing is common.

i would not share...i'm glad we don't have to do that..but the way i look at it is..if people like you they will tip you more...so why should you have to give your money to someone that is obviously not doing something right if they are not making about the same amount...

My son was both a busser and waiter at one of our restaurants in Michigan. He got paid minimum wage to bus, but also got a share of tips at the end of the night from the wait staff he bussed for. As a waiter, he had to share as well. Don't know if there is a "standard procedure" for the amount that has to be shared, cause I believe the wait staff give their bussers what they feel is appropriate. When he was a waiter he regularly came home with $100/night, about $50/night as a busser.

Hmmmmm, I always thought that everyone had to be paid a minimum wage, I think this is wrong. Why is your daughter not making the minimum wage and the others are? Patti

If youre a server..minimum wage is $2.13 because the tips are part of your wage. Some people (those who run the "to go" at places ike chilis) work at minimum wage because the tips they get are extra..they are not relying on just tips for their wages..

Not making minimum wage is acceptable in all kinds of service industries. Wait staff always make somewhere in the $2/hr range. I also know that in the vacation areas, those folks that actually take you on the tours that you book usually only make in this same range and rely on tips for the rest of their salary. That is why they always tell you up front to tip if you are happy with your trip.

Yep, tip sharing is common, but if I were you, I would have your daughter figure up exactly how many hours she worked and what she actually made for that time period and see how much it works out to per hour. If it doesn't even add up to regular minimum wage, then she should be talking to her boss about how much they are taking out to share...she should at the very least be making minimum and it is probably illegal if she is not. It's great she enjoys her job, but she does need to be paid fairly.

Am i reading this right? $2 give or take is mininum wage? Seriously? Here it's $7.63. Wow... Tips are considered part of your wage.. what if you don't make any tips? Not everyone tips or tips correctly. My daughter's friend works at Ruby Tuesdays as a bus boy. He makes $8/hr plus tips.

You could maybe ononimously call the manager and inquire as to the pay scale and how tips work. Say you had a really helpful person you tipped but later found out that she didn't get to keep her tip... or something like that. You might find out that the other girl made up her own policies. If he comes back and says they keep the first $20, then your daughter needs to tell her supervisor what happened.

I bussed tables at an expensive restaurant when I was about 15... The waitresses did not split tips, but they would put a few bucks in an envelope to be split up among us bussers...

If you were REALLY good one of 'em might pull you aside and slip you an extra $5 or $10 just for you... I figured out pretty quick who was apt to do that and I made darn sure I helped to take care of her / their tables the second they needed anything!

No, minimum wage is much higher ($5.15 in Michigan). But not all job types are required to be paid minimum wage. Servers are in that category.

Hmmmm, I don't think it is that way here in Calif. gonna ask about that. Hubby just said he thought minimum wage is a Federal law and in his opinion their not abiding by it. This is not right and if the other girls are servers then why are they making minimum wage and she isn't? I worked in Angola, Indiana back when hubby went to college there and got paid .50 cents and hour I worked by myself and did everything, cooked, served, did dishes. Closed at the end of the day and then had all the cleaning to do. I definately would hope that things would be greatly different in these times. Being the age of 16 doesn't make any difference, one at that age can be just as productive and an asset to a business as anyone older can. Sorry that there are owners of business's that are such cheap skates (HUBBY JUST SAID THAT) so I had to add his comment they haven't come a long way from their salary to only be paying $2.13 an hour, that is disgraceful. Not everyone is tippers and if they don't get enough tips then they aren't even making a minimum wage, and then to have to share the tips above $20.00 with others. To have to share her tips with the others that are making the min. wage just is down right not right. This is my opinion as well as my hubbies. Missy's daughter is an exceptional young lady to even consider taking a job under those circumstances and to not be paid more than that shows that she definately wants to work. I hope the owner of the business will realize that and pay her the fair wage as the others are getting.
