Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Puppies Mistakenly Euthanized Puppies Mistakenly Euthanized POSTED: 5:08 am PDT May 23, 2006 UPDATED: 2:14 pm PDT May 23, 2006 TACOMA, Wash. -- The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County is conducting an internal investigation after five puppies were mistakenly euthanized. The animals were "put down" less than six hours after a good Samaritan dropped them off at the shelter. Video: Shelter Mistakenly Euthanizes Puppies The mixed-breed puppies had apparently escaped from a home in Tacoma. They were found several streets away and were dropped off at the William Gazecki animal shelter just after 3:30 p.m. last Friday. By 9 p.m. they were dead. The owner of the dogs, Greg Stillwell, said he had hoped to find good homes for the puppies. He plans to sell the six remaining puppies from the litter. The case comes at a time when the Humane Society is working hard at becoming a no-kill shelter by the end of 2008. In January, officials unveiled an ad campaign to get people to spay and neuter their pets. Copyright 2006 by KIROTV.com. All rights reserved. | I don't understand how this could have happened. I would think any staff would double check before putting puppies to sleep...would seem like something you'd want to verify.

| The Humane Society was on TV last night and made a public statement that they were wrong and that they launching a formal investigation. They are really upset that it happened. Especially since they want to move to a no kill shelter! The puppies were so cute, some mixed breed and they all looked different and adorable! I felt really bad about the owner, he was really upset!

| This has happened before, but at a vet. Someone brought in thier dog to be fixed and it got euthanized instead due to a mixup. |

| I was a kennel supervisor for more than 3 yrs at a Human Society. Mistakes happen the people who work there are only human. I speak from experience. When you put down over 25 dogs and puppies not counting cats and kittens you do not double check a litter of puppies. You double check ID# and such but it is really easy to make a mistake when shelters are so full. When I worked there it seemed like some days you went threw the motions without being there. It is always sad when things like this happen but people can not fault the shelter or the people. We live in a sad world were so much innocent life is destroyed everyday (and I am not talking just about animals). |

| I saw this on the 11:00 news last night and I live only 15 minutes from Tacoma. Very sad and heartbreaking. I would be opening up a can of WHOOP-A$$ if it were me.
