| I am married to an idiot sorry but i have to vent. My stepson who is 18 just reminded my husband that he paid for his older son's car insurance until he graduated from high school. I have made the 18 year old pay for his car insurance because he gets awful grades. No honor roll no pay for your insurance. My husband was actually entertaining the though of paying for it...until I reminded him his 18 year old son does not even have a DRIVERS LICENSE. He lost it a month ago due to to many tickets. He had the nerve to say he still needed insurance. Why in the world would I pay for his insurance when he doesn't even have a license. |

| Stand firm - you are doing the right thing. If he has insurance, some idiot friend will let him drive even without his license. Children need to learn life lessons and since they know everything and we know nothing, all we can do is set our boundaries and stick with them!

| The key is "he lives in your house". My theory is my house, my rules. Abide by them or find your own way. I would take away the keys for sure. My kids are 21 and 23 and still have to abide by rules when they stay here and because we're still helping out with school expenses. Good luck!

| I'm with you, but on the opposite end. My husband's family never drove. When he was 17 he rode his bike to the DMV, took his test and got himself a car. Now, he thinks our son should have to pay for his own car and insurance. I think it's totally unreasonable, especially with the costs today. Insurance alone is $4000. He is of the "no one gave me anything" school. I, on the other hand, feel my sons "job" is to do well in school. He'll have a part time job to pay for gas, but even that is a stretch. He thinks I'm spoiling him. I think he's being an idiot. I think I'm winning this one, but it bugs me that it even has to be a discussion. Sometimes you just want to smack them upside the head, don't you?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Wow I wouldn't let my dtr have a car if she didn't have a license. My dtr is 20 lives at home and is an only child. She is finishing her 2nd year of college and works 20 hours a week. I have always tied good behaviour to earning rewards/privileges. We had agreed that we would get her a car if she chose to go to a local college. Then I lost my job, so her grandpa leant her the money to buy her car outright. He passed away in November and I still make her pay 100.00 a month. My husband said why does she have to pay now that my dad is gone. I said because that was the deal and it was money we would have gotten if he hadn't leant her the money. She gives me a check every month and I think it's quite a good deal, new car and we pay for gas and insurance. Kids need to earn things to make them appreciate them

| We pay for our boys cars, insurance, and gas. They both got their license when they turned 16. We still pay for their insurance and gas, but both are Med Students living here at home. We always told them from day one, no grades no car. Your husband is right on the insurance for the car, but not if your son will be driving it. If the car is in his name and something happens, all bills will go to him, his fault or not. If the car is in your name, the insurance will cover the other car, but not your's if the driver does'nt have a license. Good Luck to you,

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Dad sounds like he could be an enabler - I think you're right to say what you said. Our children need to learn that driving is a PRIVLEDGE not a 'given'... if your step-son is serious about driving - it would be better for him to have to strive to pay his own insurance for now - or he really could end up in some serious trouble with tickets etc. When the money is coming out of HIS own pocket - he'll be WAY MORE CAREFUL. |

| Hmmm. I got straight A's and I paid for my car, gas and insurance. Still do. My dad said that he'd help me pay for a car if I got a job and worked for a year. Well, how was I supposed to get to work if I didn't have a car? I bought a really crappy car (13 years old) and repaired it all the time. But I woudln't have it any other way. I don't believe in handing kids stuff. And I got good grades even though I worked 25 hours per week, so I don't see that as an excuse.

You're right, he should have a license. Why not send him to court to get a license for to and from work only. They do that out here, but if he gets caught driving any other time, it's a big fine.
