| Anyone here that owns a WESTIE??? or has knowledge of the breed? Just wondering if anyone here owns a Westie? My groomer/friend has a Westie that had puppies today...and it had ELEVEN puppies!!! Is it common for that breed to have such a large litter??? She had another of her females that had two puppies about 9 weeks ago...one died and she is keeping the other. She was SHOCKED when this female delivered eleven today! She said they just kept coming and then she'd think she was done and another would come out...then she'd think it was over...and another would come out. The last three came out and she didn't even know it because she was cleaning up the floor....she thought she was done again when the count was at eight. If anyone knows if this is normal please let me know and also would she need a calcium supplement for the mommy dog (like yorkies do with large litters) and should she bottle feed the pups between nursings to make sure they get enough (mommy only has eight teets) and to make sure the mommy doesn't get eclampsia (don't know if that is a worry for Westies)? The puppies looked really small, like as small as Bitsy's did when they were born....but her mommy dog weighs a good 15 lbs or so (I'm guessing) and she said the other two pups that were born 9 weeks ago were not this tiny. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Sorry so long.

| Eleven is a LOT for ANY dog! OMG! poor little girl. If the other mother can help suckle the pups, it would probably be good, sometimes they will do that? It is pretty hard to feed the puppies until they get a week or two old. Probably the mom can handle it until then, she just needs to make sure all the babies are eating. I would probably weigh them twice a day for a week or so. At least once. I love Westie's, I have never had one, but they are so pretty and friendly.

| Hi Michelle! Oh my! 11 pups! Yes, I do have a Westie but I don't know any Westie breeders. Wow!! I love my Billie...she is a great dog...she is my oldest dog at 5 years right now. I wonder if that is some kind of a record?? |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | Michelle, I'm looking but I can't find much. Just that an average litter is 2-5 pups. I'll keep looking and let you know if I see anything!

| I haven't had much luck, of course, I get caught up looking at everyone's puppies, they are so adorable. I do hope her mom and puppies do well. Boy is that going to be a lot of work. Tell her we are all thinking of her. Wouldn't mind seeing pictures either

| The largest litter of puppies is 24, all of whom were born on November 29, 2004 to Tia, a Neopolitan mastiff, owned by Damian Ward (UK) and Anne Kellegher (Ireland) of Manea, Cambridgeshire, UK. Got this out of Guiness Book of World Records, she is almost half way there!

| My sister's Cocker had 11 puppies 7 weeks ago (one died). The mother will need supplemented. I am no expert, but I would let things go naturally as long as possible. She needs to start supplementing the mother Westie right away. My sister's Cocker isn't very big and was able to take care of all of the pups during the first few weeks (no bottle feeding I mean). Of course your friend will have to watch them very closely and make sure they are all gaining weight. |
