| Animal Hoarding - what you need to know Since animal hoarding seems to be coming up a lot lately, I felt we should revisit this frustrating topic. I believe it has been posted before; but rather than look for an bump an old thread, I am starting this one. I hope this will bring about more compassion for those who suffer from such an illness. Very hard for us to understand...I get that....and it is easy to be angry with someone; but they need prayers, not vicious words and gossip. Someone recently made a comment that it would "never" happen to them. I can tell you that I have seen people cross that line into hoarding and it was insidious, not something planned. I knew one for years and it was extremely difficult for me to watch it happen and be one of the persons to report it. I truly believe it is a mental illness. People who suffer from any illness go through denial and most certainly mentally ill people suffer from it. To think that a person who once loved dogs or cats (or any other living animal) just suddenly decided to neglect them is not even logical. Here is an informative link about animal hoarding: What is animal hoarding? Is it like hoarding lots of objects? Can people be cured? | Anxiety and Depression Association of America, ADAA From the above link: When most people hear about animal hoarding, they recall shocking news stories or imagine “crazy cat lady.” They immediately side with the rescued animals, rarely considering the life of the hoarder or what led to this behavior. The term "animal hoarding" refers to the compulsive need to collect and own animals for the sake of caring for them that results in accidental or unintentional neglect or abuse. Most hoarders of animals fall victim to their good intentions and end up emotionally overwhelmed, socially isolated, and ultimately alienated from family and friends. The problem causes immense suffering for both animals and people. It also creates great expense for local animal shelters and may require regional and national efforts to find homes for large numbers of animals.

| I see there have been fifty views...no comments. At least people ARE reading it and that is a good thing. This is a very important topic imo.

| I have known animal hoarders. well actually one and I feel so bad for her. I was going to step in and get her help but her daughter did and she now has 2 dogs and 1 cat and sees a therapist . She said just recently it just happened before she knew what was happening. She said she truly thought she was saving the animals and now she knows she was doing herself and the animals more harm than good. She helps out at our local shelter now and she seems so much happier!!!! So it IS a very serious illness and more people need to acknowledge it. IMO |

Nope...no one can virtually guarantee anything in life...I think it was John Lennon who said that "life is something that happens while you are busy making other plans".

| Some of the "hoarder" stories I've heard or read clearly point to a well intentioned person who got swept away in the need to help. It appears they are badly mistreated when the "authorities" raid them. Why isn't "rescue" showing up with a gentle helping hand in those cases? Or are they?

I don't see a need for any rescue to "out' anyone who surrenders and/or loses a pup or pups. Rescue imo should just take care of the pups. What really kills me is that I see rescues taking breeder dogs( from bad situations} in and keeping the identity of the breeders secret....so why wouldn't the same thing apply to an individual? I think the main problem really is a misunderstanding, or quite possibly and intolerance, of what this really is... a mental illness. With the puppy mills, you aren't dealing with mental illness and yet people think it is something they should not make public. They cover for the bad breeders saying they do that so they can get more??? How about you work to get the places closed down? Mind boggling to me.

| People that say they will NEVER be in that position really need to open their eyes. You never know what will come in the future. I agree with the above poster who said hoarding can come about via another situation. I feel they are trying to fill a void perhaps. Could be they lost their significant other or family member and looking for someone or pet to make them feel less empty. It could turn into a hoarding situation.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Great thread, I think when we understand the “whys” better we have much more compassion for our fellow man. All it takes is a couple of tragedies, a loss of a loved one, an illness, or divorce, and our brain chemistry can completely change, and we can start doing things we normally wouldn’t do. Animal hoarders are not evil; they are experiencing some great trauma and are dealing with it the only way they know how. Instead of judging we should be saying, "except for the grace of God go I."
