| I thought you would get a kick out of this This is from the Housekeeping Monthly May 13 1955. There is a picture of a man coming home from work and his wife in the kitchen and to the side a little boy and his dog. The Good Wife' Guide: Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before , to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when the come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favorite dish) is part of a warm welcome. Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him, his boring day may need a lift and one of your duties to provide it. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before his arrival. Comments appreciated. Mine is "I thought I was his favorite dish"

| That's great Thanks for sharing. I feel fortunate to be a wife who comes home frequently to a meal my husband has made...he is great about cleaning up and making meals when my schedule doesn't allow the time. It makes it so much easier for the flow of our family with both of us working full time and all the other demands of life to have that responsibility shared. I can definitely say that meals aren't always planned out the day before for us...usually it's on the way home from work!

Good Wife Guide, maintaining children and house is a full time JOB. No sick time, no paid holidays. That's a 365 day job. Does anyone remember the Donna Reed show where she would be in a beautiful dress, swooping through the door, looking all refreshed in full make up after a full day of house work lol. The perfect picture of what a perfect wife should look like when DH would get home from work. Always made me feel like a failure because I couldn't be a Donna Reed housewife, in beautiful dress and full make up and perfect hair style, with perfect table set up and perfect dinner to be served as soon as DH walked through that door. Thank GOD that brain washing has ended and hubby's help when wife holds down same full time job as he does. Gezzzz was this a response or a rant lol.

| I think if one spouse does not work, they should take care of all the house and/or child duties, whether it be the husband or the wife. But nowadays there aren't many households who don't have both people working. Seems like everyone except two sets of my aunts and uncles. Both couples are husband works, wife does not. Also they only had one kid each. Sure makes it easier than say both parents working with three kids, plus the grandparents. Hmm, no wonder they stayed married and my parents divorced LOL.

Agree. My dad didn't work for a time and the house was always spotless and the same for when my mom didn't work but dad did... Same for me and hubby, now. Well, hubby has always worked, but I resigned my job six months ago so I can study full time. However, since I'm based at home with no set hours, I ensure the house is spotless and he has a hot meal after work everyday. I enjoy doing these things for him cuz I know he'd do the same and even though I am not technically "working" right now, he still cleans on the weekends and even cooks on the weekdays so I can have a break. I think, also, that having some sort of expectation in regards to behavior for housewives in the 50's was sort of healthy. I mean, otherwise, they would have just chilled in front of the TV all day with no goals and that can't be healthy for one's mental state. Maybe these expectations gave them something to achieve in the day and a sense of purpose since they couldn't work.. I know it sounds sexist and archaic now but it probably worked back in the day for different reasons in the context of the time. By the way, I love Lucy!!!!! | |
