Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Life Saving Precautions - Written By A Cop... (((Got this via email, thought it was worth sharing!))) 1. The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do! 2. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you...Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! 3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives. 4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR , LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location. 5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!) 7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern! 8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim. 9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door..' The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby.. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night. 10. Water scam! If you wake up in the middleof the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full blast so that you will go out to investigate and then attack.

| I remember making the rounds on FB last year. Here's Snopes response to it. They offer some good common sense tips towards the end of their article. snopes.com: Nine Tips -- Written by a Cop I remember inquiring into it due to the claim about the elbow being so strong after my daughter fell and fractured her elbow in three places.

| When I was a little kid in grade school I rode my bike to the library. I parked it behind the building where it was deserted. When I went to leave, a big man came near me and started grunting at me. He couldn't talk. He kept motioning me towards an outer building on the lot. I figured out he was trying to ask me to open the door to the building because he couldn't get it open. I started to go help him then something in my little kid mind asked myself why a big man would ask a little kid to open a door. If he couldn't open it, how could a little kid open it. It didn't make any sense. I looked at his face and something made me jump on my bike and pedal home faster than I knew I could pedal. Always when I think back on that, I am SO glad I went with my instincts because I think there is a good chance that I wouldn't be here today if I hadn't.

| Thanks, Ann When it was just the children and I at home...I used to keep a hammer by our front door 'just in case'. The husband of a friend of mine told me that was all wrong - a hammer can be grabbed. Instead, he told me to always keep a saw to hand as that can't be grabbed....

Being aware is the most important thing. This also goes for activity around your home. I'm part of a neighborhood watch group, and it is nice to know that my neighbors and I all keep our eyes open to what goes on in our block. We also have names and contact info of the neighbors, and we watch out for each other, and have great communication and cooperation of police. We have our own neighborhood watch Yahoo group, so we can quickly and easily notify all participating neighbors of any concerns. Another helpful service of the police department here is they will come to your home and evaluate safety factors and make recommendations, such as trimming scrubbery near the house, adding motion activated security lights, security cameras (yes, even the fake ones are a deterrent), and my favorite "get a dog". They say even a small dog that barks is about as good as an alarm, and I've got that covered times three. My pups are the best alarm system around; they tell me when someone is in the yard, not just in the house.

| I agree, both the original and the Snopes are good advice. I also agree with being aware of surroundings. It's easy for me to be preoccupied, and I've had a false sense of security being a tall woman, less likely a target. However, I've had a few encounters with people with not-so-good intentions. Also freaks me out that I've had people slip things into my purse, religious pamphlets and other literature. I keep my purse closed and in front of me now.

| These precautions are something everyone should know. Be also mindful if your tire is flat in a parking lot and someone comes up to offer help. It is easy for someone to put a nail in and being a woman most likely won't attempt to change it. Better to go back to the store and call from inside for AAA or someone you know to come help you.

| It's sad that we have to be so worried about encountering strangers. My same daughter that broke her elbow in three places, also got a flat tire on the way back to college. She was on a somewhat remote freeway on the opposite side of the state (3 hours from home) stranded. A rough looking (she called him a "biker dude") stopped to help her. So she stayed on the phone with me the whole time. The guy took her tire 3 miles up the freeway to the next exit to a gas station, fixed her tire, and brought it back and put it on for her. He said he hoped someone would do the same for his daughter. I think there are more good people than bad in the world, but those few horrible ones ruin it and make us paranoid. The only strangers I really cant stand are the Jehovah's witnesses, salesmen, and politicians, that blatantly ignore my no soliciting signs and show up on my doorstep. I refuse to answer the door to anyone I've not invited over or am expecting. There should be a law against anyone coming to your home uninvited!

| CREEPY!!! But good to know. My mom always taught us if someone says to go with them or they'll kill you to let them kill you right there in front of everyone before you go with them I just hope I remember that if it's happening |

| Also it reminded me of that girl kidnapped from that coffee stand real close from my house, I USED to walk Joel right passed there and have met the girl, she was killed And she walked off with the guy by a busy road, she must have been so scared. I just hope I would know what to do if in that situation |
