| Big Dog - Wakes up Abruptly Startled and Shaking This is my brother's dog. My SIL said the dog is older and it takes a long time to calm her down and she seems terrified. I told her to take the dog to the vet ASAP. Any ideas what this could be? It is a large red dog, like a Irish Setter or maybe a mix.

| I hope it is just nightmares. My brother won't take her to the vet. I would be running to the vet the first time it happened. That's just me. I probably worry too much.

| I am guessing it could be pain. Perhaps she has a joint, or arthritis, that through the course of the night becomes painful from laying in one position too long causing her to wake agitated, or some other form of pain. What a shame they won't take her to be evaluated. Could be as simple as some simple pain meds to help her through this stage of her life.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | It could be so many things - but like we all know if this is a new behaviour, and most especially if it takes her a long time to settle down - that is of more concern. A startle reflex could be that her hearing is going a bit, and she is waking up to reverberations under her body, that she did not hear first; then that scares her and she starts to shake. It could be a sign of more serious things...... Senior dogs need vet care - well most especially senior dogs. Which of course you know.

| It makes me so mad that he won't at least have a vet check her out. He seems to really love his dog. I don't really know the situation, such as if he takes her to the vet for yearly shots. I just know that she is older and she deserves to be treated if she needs it.

| I'd worry about kidney or bladder stones or other painful conditions. It could be a nightmare but usually they calm within seconds down once the know reality is back.

| What about your SIL??? You and your SIL could load up this senior and take her when brother isnt around.... Work together like partners in crime, if she is fearful of what bro/DH will do! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 01-27-2015 at 08:14 AM. |

| I will ask her but I don't think she would do it. It's a complicated thing. I think I will try to find out if this poor dog is getting yearly vet checks. My brother and I don't have a great relationship, although I do with his wife, so it is kind of complicated. I just dont think she would mess with his dogs.
