Omg Joan Rivers has passed

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.

My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon." - Melissa Rivers

Not sure who else is a comedy fan here, but I'm actually genuinely upset over here. What a loss to the comedy world today. And so soon after Robin Williams. Sheesh...

The red carpet will never be the same...

Me and my Grandmother loved to watch fashion police. I wasn't very optimistic once she was taken to the hospital then even less so when she was moved to a private room and being kept comfortable. Sad.

I am also very sad to have to face, yet again, a person that really did not have the "knowledge of an insider in the medical field", has paid for a clinic's gross negligence with her life. And not to approach this from a political angle, but rather to use this example strictly as a teaching moment.....when Rick Perry passes laws that demand that clinics (abortion) have doctors that have hospital affiliation, have specific resuscitative equipment and training for staff members, etc, or they must not be risking womens lives performing abortions, THIS is exactly what he is trying to prevent. I have NO concern about what a woman wants to do as fae as her body is concerned, but I do advocate for patient's that THINK they are safe in clinics. If a clinic is not prepared to provide effective CPR, and if physicians that run the clinic do not have affiliation with a hospital within close proximity to that clinic, any patient that is undergoing procedures in that clinic are at grave risk of loosing their lives in the case of an emergency. You see what happened in Joan's case, and this clinic was close to a hospital....still, it only takes 3 minutes for an untrained staff to fly around in a panic, calling 911, trying to figure out what to do next.....without oxygen, your heart begins to slow...when she had a cardiac arrest, that tells me she was without breath for at least 45 seconds....her heart slowed, then stopped, and I can just imagine these people scrambling around in a panic, waiting for an ambulance to arrive.....this is sooooooo unfortunate. I can imagine she was "on life support", ie a ventillator, and sedated into a medically induced coma....but I would imagine they had already tried to start waking her up, stopped all sedation, and were getting no response, so over the last 3 days they were doing the EEGs to signify zero brain activity. That is when the family was faced with that gut wrenching decision, they moved her to a private room so the family could be with her, and I suspect they removed the ventillator at that time.....and the first trailblazing female comediane of the century, passed on. How tragic....I wish she would have had the information available to her to know if something happens we probably wont be able to resusitate you effectively.....Now, I do hope there is a lawsuit....and I can only imagine how the notes and records at that clinic have already been "adjusted" to try to show no negligence on the part of the clinic. So sad........

Heartily agree with everything you've said, including the probable sequence of what happened once they realized she was brain-dead. Once they moved her from ICU without an accompanying statement of her condition being upgraded, I knew. Some of those clinics know nothing about emergency medicine and have nothing to little to offer for a patient in trouble and I wonder at the some of these dentists' offices who practice conscious sedation where the anesthesiologist brings his equipment in a kit into the room with the patient he's about to sedate into unconsciousness!

At the ortho surgeon's office where I worked, during one of our emergency drills, we couldn't get our oxygen to flow(!), even though the regulators were regularly tested, and it was at least four to five minutes until the extra tank was found and fetched back to the room our fake-crashed patient, now certainly a brain-dead fake-dead patient, was in. And we didn't sedate or administer general anesthesia to anyone ever in our clinic! But we just never had a plan in place in case any of the equipment malfunctioned - until then.

I also wonder at the pre-op work-up she got - if that was as thorough as it should have been for someone her age. Then I also heard she was out performing her act at a function the night before her procedure instead of showing up for surgery in an assured rested state.

I sure hope this opens the eyes of people having procedures that anytime you are rendered unconscious, your doctor needs to know you are medically able to withstand the sedation and the procedure and that the facility he's working at has a crash team present, an AED plus all of the frequently tested, working equipment and unexpired drugs needed to efficiently resuscitate a patient who crashes.

Well, the consolation with regard to the clinic she was at is that the health department is opening an investigation against them, tho it does little for the loss of Joan herself. I agree, I hope the family sues the pants off them. My understanding is that they shouldn't have even been performing that procedure on a woman her age. If she needed it done, she should have been in a hospital with a fully trained staff at their immediate disposal.

Gosh, doesn't seem real, which is crazy. The woman lived the fullest of lives, but you always forget that these people, tho legendary are still human and not immortal...

I am also shocked and saddened at Joan Rivers' loss.

I can't even put into words how I feel about it all right now, I am just so sad but also so mad at the doctor, because this absolutely should not have happened.

RIP Joan, my earliest memories of Joan are her appearances on QVC with her little Yorkie Spike. I remember thinking how cute Spike was.

Positive thoughts for her daughter and Grandson.

My question is (Rhetorical Questions)...Supposedly, this was a minor vocal cord surgery that was done in an ASC facility that should have had oxygen and a crash cart in that facility for these types of situations. Having a crash cart can save a person that is in respiratory or cardiac distress until the ambulance gets there. Was there not one there? Also, before her surgery did they do all the necessary tests being she was 81 to make sure she could handle this surgery in an ASC facility verses a hospital setting? Hopefully those questions will be answered once the investigation is completed. My personal opinion like I told my sister today is that she was in ICU, intubated and had no brain activity. They moved her to a private room so her daughter could call who she needed to call to get there before they disconnected the machine. Such a tragedy to lose another great comedian. May she rest in peace.

You are right...but (and I am basing this only on 35+ years in critical care nursing) if there was no one there that could intubate her, to get past the laryngospasm she was apparently in, so she could get oxygen to her brain/organs, and then people that knew how to give effective CPR.....they could have all the right equipment right at her side and it was all for naught. And something else....she was out to dinner the night before she had this done....usually, with surgery, you are definately nothing by mouth from AT LEAST midnight on....and in the case of seniors, in a clinic setting, you would think only perhaps liquids for dinner the night before.....that is something our out patient ambulatory surgery department always told their patients to do. Lordy lordy.....so unnecessary.....

I totally agree with you and I am a Cardiovascular tech so I do understand what you are saying. You could only hope that if there was a crash cart there, they would have someone or multiple people there that are trained to use it. It's such a shame to think this unfortunate tragedy could have been avoided. My sister was telling me tonight that the night before her surgery, Joan Rivers was performing a show in Manhattan and joked about dying. Oh so eerie!

She made such a way for women in comedy and didn't take any crap. I will always remain a ranger and I will miss her strength deeply. RIP Joan...now you and Robin Williams will have the heavens above in stitches.

I was so saddened to learn of her death. She was such a dynamo (sp) for someone her age. Amazing schedule. What a terrible shame. I saw her in concert and she had you laughing the entire time. RIP
