| Mobile phone in US My brother has just moved to the US to work for 6 months, any suggestions where he could get a phone that would allow him to Skype etc eg iphone, Samsung galaxy etc, a good second hand one would be ok, and also, do you have a prepay Sim option in the US? He will be travelling around a bit eg Minnesota, texas, north and south Dakota and possibly Canada - will all networks work in all areas?

| I live in northern (very northern) Mn and i know that there are some phone companies that get very spotty service. Up here the majority use Verizon. Have you checked with like Walmart and the smart talk phones????

| I am in the UK so can only make suggestions to him, or organise something from here and get it sent to him internally in the US. He has just arrived, I am not sure where exactly he is but he is doing agricultural work (harvesting) I think, so I am not sure how rural an area he is in or if he can even get to walmart.

| Everyone can get to a walmart. When travelling, I always say, "We are not lost - there is a Walmart" They have Android phones thru Straight Talk. I have my phone service thru straight talk, but it's not a smart phone. The key is to get the type of phone that bounces off of the most reliable cell service -which almost always is Verizon Wireless. My boss has the Straight Talk Android (LG Optimus) and it is a smart phone, can skype, and bounces off of Verizon Wireless towers. Have him check into that.

| Thanks ladies, will look this up! Would this be a better option than a second hand phone - are there any reliable places to get a second hand one, or just the usual places such as ebay and gumtree?

For second hand phones, amazon.com is a good place to look.

Yes, we do have phones that you can prepay minutes on as needed, and not have to sign yearly contracts to use. Will he be making international calls on the phone? ...cos that's where the problems come into play. Most mobile phones here do not have international calling, but you can get some with international calling capability, especially if you are wanting to call an international landline. I have a prepaid mobile phone that I use almost exclusively to make international calls to landlines in England, from here in the States. I also have a daily mobile that I use for everyday calling/texting within the States. Walmarts are like Asda, almost every city has one. He should be able to get something there, if not, a Verizon store would be able to help him.

| He doesn't have a laptop or ipad. So he will need a device for Skype and also for making international calls. Thanks for the advice, I expect the people he is working for will also be able to give him information.
