| grammer rant What do they teach in schools nowadays? I am watching TV and someone states "why don't you meet Johnathan and I at your house" REALLY????? Are you going to meet I at your house? No. You are going to meet me at your house, so you would meet Johnathan and ME at your house. I absolutely hate when people use "I" when is should be "me". They think they sound proper, but they just sound like idiots. I not only see this on TV, but in books, too. What do proofreaders and editors do??? Sorry, but this is a very long standing peeve of mine. Does it bother anyone else or am I just too OCD to function in society?

| We all have our personal pet peeves about grammar. I think some of the problem is the local dilates and people who have english as a second language. I have become so much more aware of grammar in the past few years, and once I see a mistake I have been making it bothers me when I hear it in others. It is almost like I am relearning grammar!!!! I hate "I am doing good!" or "I don't go no money" or...well you understand!! I think I read somewhere that many adults read on a 3rd grade level, or that newspapers are written to a 3rd grade level... that could explain a lot. My fear is my spelling and pronunciation.

| As a teacher I will say this. First, I am not perfect in my grammar at all. Second, they do teach it. However, society has changed and the kids in today's world are so different then we were. So many of them don't care to learn it. Not all but most. With that said, my 10th grader son is the grammar police. He is doing his part in helping your rant!

| My biggest is your and you're. I see so many people say things like "your not going to like it" instead of you're not going to like it. You're is YOU ARE!. I do not ever see you're used. |

| I was guilty of this myself. Easy mistake. My son has made sure I work on doing this correctly. Lol. Very common mistake.

| I hate when I hear people say "he don't like that" or something similar. The word is DOESN'T!! Don't means do not. Doesn't means does not

| I agree with you - it makes me shake my head in disbelief. What do kids learn in school today? Most don't even hold a pencil correctly.

| Kids are taught based on state frameworks. Which means the state tells teachers what to teach at each grade level. Due to the amount of frameworks, there is no time for "extras". So basically, the government offices control what's taught. As a former math teacher, my kids can solve Algebra problems but can't count change. Why? Because the state department tells me to teach Algebra. It is sad but true. Teachers have no control over what to teach. We just do what we are told. If people would put more pressure on the government offices instead of blaming the teachers more might be accomplished. And there needs to be accountability on teachers, students, and parents. Not just the teachers.

| I agree with all of you! These are not hard things to teach and learn. Do they even teach participles and such anymore? Pretty soon no one will know how to write cursive...everything will be typed.

well said Teachers are teaching to the "test" because if they don't they will not be rehired. Things like writing and grammar is a lost art. The parents must take more control of what is happening to education and not let someone (Government) who does not know much about teaching make the decisions. Who profits from the test? Not us, not the kids, not the schools... it is the companies who write and print the test, the booklets etc They are in with the elected officials who are making the test a requirement. Also, it is changing... lol has been added to Webster! Think of what the kids hear in their music, TV and community... that is their true grammar teachers. The problems are not just the teachers; it is a combination of parents, community, Government and the changing world. It is hard to have students understand concepts from our generation when they have more power in their smart phones then the first space mission!!! Spell check, auto correct, memory dialing makes our minds go to mush, imho Well, I am sure I made grammar mistakes in my above rant. I will stop now.
