Default D'oh!

This weekend we drove about 3 hours from home to visit some good friends! We had a great weekend with them, and ended up leaving a little later than expected. We were really hoping to get home before dark, but it gets dark pretty early here at this time of year!

Anyways, so we finally said all of our goodbyes, got the dogs ready, we all walked out to the SUV. DH had already started it so it would be warm (it is pretty cold and snowy here already!) and I tried to open the hatch. It didn't open. DH said press the button! I said I am, and it's not open. He said he just had it open, so it's weird that it locked. So he went to the driver side door and tried to open it - locked. ALL of the doors were locked, and the keys were in the ignition, it was running, and we didn't have any spare keys with us!!!

So we went back inside and kind of ruined our friends' supper They had just got it ready. She offered us some food but I knew she only had enough for the two of them so I declined! She offered to call CAA for us, thank GOODNESS, because we don't have it. Unfortunately, we had to wait for someone to come from the closest city. It took about 45 minutes before we could get into the car and drive home.

Poor DH felt so awful, I couldn't rub it in. But I just know if it were me, he would have been really upset. I prefer that he makes those kind of mistakes lol!!! At least now we'll know to always take spare keys! Oh, and it was nice and warm when we finally got in!

Oh, gosh! You're not alone. This happens a lot in some form or fashion to almost everyone sooner or later! Thank goodness at least you got in and home and learned your lesson the hard way like most of us did. Now I carry spare keys to the house doors, deadbolts, storm doors' deadbolts, garage door and the car in my wallet in my purse. I always have my purse with me - or at least my wallet - so I can almost say never again for me! I can't say it can't happen - I could forget my wallet(!) - but I'll tell you those spare keys have saved me more than once since I started carrying them!

Luckily we have keypads for our garage doors and the door into the house from the garage so we don't have to carry keys too often for the house! In fact, we also have a keypad for keyless entry on our SUV... but it is a Lincoln that we bought used from a Chrysler dealership, and they couldn't code it for us when we bought it. All we've had to do is make an appointment to have it done at a Ford/Lincoln dealership, but we bought it in May and haven't made an appointment for that yet either That is also next on the to-do list! And a membership to CAA!

Lol oh I know!!!! There's a double standard there between when I do something stupid and when he does something stupid. A couple of years ago when we were still just dating, we decided to take a trip together to the mountains one summer. He was driving and I was having a nap in the passenger seat. He was eating sunflower seeds, and had a little container full of shells after getting the seeds. As he was driving, he thought he'd dump the empty shells out the window. He opened the window and tried to throw the seeds out, but as soon as he dumped them, the wind picked them up and threw them all back into the car lol! I woke up getting sprayed with hundreds of sunflower seed shells! I just burst out laughing!!!!! But I even told him I KNOW if I did something like that in his car, there would have been no laughing! It is so much easier when it is him lol.

I probably would have ate my own and when he wasnt looking poored the seeds down his pants!

Well, glad all turned out okay. I know if I did that, I'd never ever hear the end of it from hubby

My best friend did this years ago. She took her two small nephews to the Philadelphia zoo. Got out of the car, went into the zoo and had a wonderful time. Came out, couldn't find her keys. Finally realized that she had left the car running with the doors all locked up She didn't have AAA so she called a tow company. They wouldn't come unless she had the cash, all she had was her checkbook. The guy was really a jerk about it, and here she had two kids under 5 to get back home in New Jersey. So she told him I'll get you the cash when you unlock the doors. She wrote him a check (it was good, she just had no cash left on her) and told him to take it and shut up

Hahaha! Yeah I think it is just a man thing! At least by the time he was dumping them, they had dried off and weren't slobbery. I probably would have been mad about that!

Oh that is awful!!! I'm glad he came at least though, and got it done. I wish people like that could be more understanding!

DH had just loaded all of our stuff in the car, including the crate that the dogs travel in. Normally they are in the crate when we put it in the car, but they were having fun playing with our friends and they had to go pee before we left, so they stayed with us and we were just going to lift them into the crate in the back of the SUV. DH said thank GOODNESS he didn't put them in their crate and then come and say goodbye. They would have freaked right out being stuck in there for so long without us!

Thank goodness all turned out ok. I swear the car I have now was built especially for me....You CAN'T lock the keys in the car! If the keys are in the ignition and you try and lock the car from the car door it automatically UNLOCKS all doors! Its the Toyota Rav 4...love that car!
I've lost count on the amount of times I locked the keys in the car with my car running! Serious panic! Have to tell you of the most noted encounter....oh boy, here goes....

I used to drive the Corolla, older one so it didn't have the feature that my Rav does...anyway I was going out for a night on the town. Had to pick up a new pair of boots to go with my outfit...back when lay-away was still around. Anyway I'm finished work, ex is suppossed to pick up the kids, I'm running late. I stop at the mall, open the door and lock it from the inside (habit)...you know the car is still running, jump out and close the door! I'm walking away and I notice the car lights are still on... Go back to investigate...realized real quick, car is running, purse and cell locked inside.. Ok, ok..ex is coming to get the kids, he can pick up my spare key while he's there. Call him assuming that he is close..pick-up is 6, its now 615...the jerk is still an hour away...he hadn't left yet!!! Now what?
Ok call my son, he is 10 at the time...daughter isn't home!
I gave him implicite instructions as to how he was going to get the keys to me. Told him bring your brother who was 8, get on the bus...money at home, told him how to get to the mall and bring mommy's spare keys. He followed my instructions to the letter! I was so so proud of that young man that day....stayed home and the ex didn't get them that weekend...told him don't bother coming! Needless to say that never happened again...started carrying my spare on my person at all times.

Time expired, wouldn't let me edit...this was back in the days when neighbours looked out for you and yours, daughter was 14 and had run to kfc to get dinner for her and her brothers, asked the neighbours to keep an eye, which they did. For those wondering why two boys aged 10 and 8 were left alone...

Oh no! Your son did a great job!!!

I am always paranoid of locking keys in so I ALWAYS lock using the key fob when I am outside and holding the key in my hand lol.

But this is how it happened to DH.... he had the back hatch open and he had the passenger door open because he was loading all of our stuff. He thought he would hit the command start button to warm up the car. So he hit command start on the fob and the doors locked, and then it said it couldn't start because a door was open. So he thought whatever, and reached over and just put the key in and started it. Then he got out and closed the doors and came inside to get me and the dogs. He forgot that all of the doors had just locked when he tried to command start!

I can see how this happened, though...my sweetie was backing my car into the garage just recently and his car was in the driveway...np hun, I'll move your car...I forgot that the keys have to be with the car or it wont start...(push button start)..stupid thing of course wouldn't start! But it did lock back as soon as I got out of the car...automatic lock!
Well thankfully it all worked out in the wash...glad you were all safe...
