| Renovation! Design advice needed Hello again! I was just here for advice on countertops, and now I'm back for more advice lol! We haven't started a kitchen renovation yet, but we did get started on a new laundry room/back of house. We own a 1916-ish 2.5 storey farmhouse. The house was moved into town and everything was gutted and redone in the 90's by previous owners. They built on an addition in the back with a hot tub room, double doors to the deck, a bathroom, and a hallway to the new attached garage, with a little laundry area off the side. We have gotten rid of the hot tub (it leaked and we have damage straight to the subfloor) and we are going to build a laundry room in its place, and then build a storage bench where the laundry is currently. Since we have floor damage, we want to just redo the floors completely. I have always hated the tile anyway. It looks like a totally different house back there! The doors are bright white, the floor is white tile, and the trim is all light brown wood. In the rest of the house we have beautiful old hardwood, original wood 5-panel doors, and thick white trim around the windows. So my idea is to swap out the doors (bathroom, basement, and eventually for the new laundry room) to nice wood 5-panel doors I found at Home Depot. We can stain them to match the original doors (they are not seen from the same area so slight differences won't be noticed!) We are going to replace the trim around the outside door and the windows to match the white painted ones in the rest of the house. My husband is going to build up trim around the interior doors to match the originals (shown in the hallway picture attached). Now, what about the FLOOR??? I really do not like the tile we have, and I think it's just such a big contrast and doesn't feel "homey" like the rest of the house. We can never get anything that will match exactly, because it's 100 years old. We kind of don't want to do real hardwood because it's between two outside doors, a laundry room, and a bathroom (our other bathroom has hardwood in it but it is old and stands up to anything lol!) We were leaning towards a wood-look vinyl plank. We saw some by Armstong I think that looked and felt very real. Of course, like I mentioned, we can't get anything that will match. Since the addition is built at an angle to the rest of the house, the floor would also need to be a different direction. If we did something like the vinyl planks, would it look ridiculous to have it running at about a 70 degree angle from the original? So the length will be running the opposite way, and at a bit of an angle. It's just really hard for me to imagine! But basically I love the look of wood floors, I don't want anything too modern, and I want something that is easy to clean and upkeep. I don't know if a different wood would look too out of place becasue it has worn differently throughout the house and it's an old house anyway - maybe some variety just adds character! Sorry for this being so long lol! I will add some pictures now. 1. Breakfast nook towards new addition 2. Hot tub (no longer there), and bathroom door beside it. The walls for the laundry room will basically be built along the edges of the hot tub. 3. Hallway towards current laundry and garage access, for a better view of the current floor 4. Hallway upstairs, sort of showing door trim (sorry, these pictures are from a long time ago!)

| Your door trim matches ours! You are lucky... It's not painted. We are having to strip years and years of paint off of ours I think some sort of tile would be nice? I agree, wood might look a little odd next to the original hardwood. I really like penny tile (in white would look nice?). For a laundry room, I think some sort of tile would be ideal so you could mop if needed.

| I love that blue paint too! How about some old fashioned tile, clay or slate flooring? We used a lot of slate in our house in NY and it was great looking and easy care(lots of mud tracked in- no problem). No matter how nice the vinyl is it still has a "fake" feel to it. |

| 1. Haha I was just talking to my friend about how we're growing up - 5 years ago I never would have gotten rid of a hot tub for laundry room lol! But honestly we rarely used it (I have a bath tub with jets upstairs, so I'd rather just use that and not have to shower chlorine off later!) and the big issue is it leaked right into the basement!!! We didn't even realize until we started having cold showers - the leaking water put out the pilot light in the hot water heater! So we had half a hot tub of water in the basement - good thing it's not finished so there wasn't damage! There were no visible leaks so it was probably just behind a jet and an easy fix, BUT the previous owners tiled the whole hot tub in with no ways to access inside. We would have to rip apart the tile to find the problem, and finish it again, so we decided to just take it out all together! 2. The paint is CIL, and the color is Jasperware 3. I just attached the pictures to the post! There is a button that says "manage attachments" and you can attach pictures that are saved to your computer. Hmmmm how expensive is slate flooring? In our last condo, we put in Allure vinyl tiles in our kitchen and bathroom and I really liked it! My parents used the same in their cabin. I have not seen a whole room done in the wood-look kind though. I have seen reviews online where people say they can't tell it from real wood, so I'm not sure which way to go! I do really like the look of wood better than tile though.

| There are many options for flooring kike you can go for: 1. Hardwoods: Hardwoods look very nice and are easy to clean and maintain and usually only require vacuuming. The best place to put hardwoods is in a living room. It looks good and stylish. 2. Tiles: Glazed ceramic tile is very durable and resistant to scratches. It is water resistant. Tile is fairly easy to clean, and stains are not much of a concern. 3. Laminate: Laminate does not scratch easily. And if it does, a little vegetable oil rubbed on the scratch will get it right out. 4. Vinyl: Vinyl is quiet and easy on your feet. It could work well in bathrooms and the kitchen because of the warmth it adds. |

| They make tile that looks like wood. Maybe an option? I see what you mean about the different angle though. Personally, for that reason alone, I would probably go with a tile that blends with the wood color. Something in a tan/brown color with grout color to match (NOT white grout). If you go with a lighter tile (white or cream) then it really stands out more and you need to blend the rooms. Good luck!

| Well we went browsing last weekend, and after discussing with the flooring consultant, we found a sample of higher-end vinyl plank to bring home. It's more rustic looking, and although it doesn't match the original, it still looks old - instead of an addition from the 90's, it might look like an addition from the 20's Since we are building a wall in that area to contain a laundry room, it will basically be just a hallway, and then the laundry room and the bathroom through doorways. So you won't see a huge expanse of this flooring from the main part of the house. I don't know, I just kind of love it. I think it looks great with the trim and wall color too. The flooring is 3 dimensional, so you can feel the grooves of the "wood" and I couldn't tell a difference walking between the sample and the real hardwood. The current tile is so cold, there is a huge difference. And I like that this will hold up well in the bathroom and laundry room, and the dogs (and maybe future children!) coming in full of rain and snow from the back yard. Here are some pictures... Please ignore the dirty floors, it is DH's "work area" and the laundry hanging area, and the place where the dogs drag in whatever sticks to their fur outside lol

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Wow that vinyl plank looks great. I live in a house built in 1784. So I understand about floors not matching. We have an addition built in 1846 lol. There is not much except for a hallway. If you love it do it. |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I heard of it but never saw it. I was thinking when I redo the bathroom. That is 3rd on the list I would check into it. I want to get rid of the tiles in the bathroom. Now that I saw the pics I think I am really going to check it out and get it for the bathroom. Thank you |

| I think this sample was either Good or Better. I can't remember for sure. The prices for Good are around $3.20/sq. ft. I think, and the Best was well over $4.00/sq. ft. by the prices this particular store quoted us. So it's really not cheap but I really like how it looks, and we are not doing a really large area. Home Depot also sells a cheaper brand called Allure (I have used it in the tile look before) but I think this sample just looks and feels better. I guess you get what you pay for though!

| I really like the flooring you chose. You should post pictures after you install it. We are waiting on some inexpensive vinyl plank to arrive... It's been months and it's still in back order It will be for a bedroom upstairs that is rarely used, so we just wanted to do something inexpensive.
