| Watch out for Sugar Free stuff! Perhaps you all know this already and I'm the only dim-bulb. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last week. The doc has no doubt it's mostly due to my PCOS. Anyway - we bought sugar free/low fat ice cream bars at the store. I had only one of them. Within about 30 minutes I was in the bathroom with a very uncomfortable tummy. The pain went away, but now I'm still running in and out of there every 30 minutes...going on for about 4 hours now and it isn't showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon. In fact, it's becoming a bit bloody due to the stresses 'down there'. I contacted ask -a- nurse and they said that treats containing sugar substitutes will have a serious effect on your bms, especially if you overindulged (which I didn't). I had 1 blasted bar (and a small one at that). Does anyone have ANY nice treat ideas that are sweet - that a Diabetic can eat and enjoy (and keep off the toilet)? I'm not looking for "fruit and yogurt mmm" ....yuck lol thanks in advance |

| Oh gee, I'm thinking... my DH is diabetic too.... he gets sugar free candy once in a great while... but alot of the SF stuff has sugar alcohols in them... heard they aren't too good either (healthwise). Maybe SF gum, but be very careful with it and anything that contains xylitol, it's extremely toxic to dogs. Hope you're feeling better soon!

| My husband found this out the hard way. He thought he would get some sugar free jelly beans. He was trying to lose weight (I am the one with diabetes). Problem was he ate the whole bag at one time. Not a big bag, but the whole none the less. He stayed in the bathroom most of that night. To this day (it happened last year) he will not touch sugar free candy. I was told i could eat most of anything, just in very small portions. If i want a piece of cake, I have a sliver instead of a big piece. That way i fill the craving. Same with ice cream, etc. I happen to like Blue Bunny sugar free ice cream found at walmart. All so fudgesicles that are no sugar added taste just like the regular ones.

| Type 1 Diabetic sharing sugar sub info. I am a type 1 diabetic. There are alot of sugar subs out there and each one reacts differently with each person. Sugar Alcohols will not do anything to me if I only eat one or two hard candies, or a carbsmart ice cream bar. But If I eat three or four candies then there can be issues. The other thing I have discovered is that over time, I have had less issues of any kind because I use less now. The other sugar substitutes you just have to experiment with. I can do Malitol very well with 0 side effects and xylitol with 0 as long as I don't over indulge. (If the food containing it is part of a big meal all the better), but if I eat anything with sorbitol I am doubled over with discomfort. So the only gum I can chew is Ice Cubes by Icebreakers. No sorbitol in that one. All the others have the sorbitol. Ice Cubes has helped when I want to snack but don't want an extra shot to have a snack. The sugar subs for coffee, Pink, yellow, blue packaging and the one called stevia now they don't bug me at all. But each tastes a bit different. It is a trial and error. I find that the sugar alcohols have never made my BS rise and for that I am grateful. As a type one if my BS goes up too gast or I misjudge the carbs I eat it is another shot.

| What medicine did they put you on? When I was diagnosed with diabetes because of my PCOS they put me on a medicine that constantly put me in the bathroom and eventually had to go off of it because my body never got used to it so that could be the cause not the chocolate. Also be careful with things that have xyolitol in them because they are toxic to your dog.

| It might be your meds instead of the ice cream bar. I know it seems like everyone with diabetes is on Metformin. I stay sick at my stomach all the time. My dh also has diabetes and we were saying the other day we might just start eating like a small piece of pie or cake and let the sugar free stuff alone. I just don't think its good for us. In moderation is the best thing I believe. |

| We eat a lot of fruit deserts here. Does it matter the sugar to carbs ratio for you or the type of sugar? I dont know why...my son can eat chocolate, he can eat ice cream if he has chocolate ice cream he's straight to the toilet and being completely flushed out. This is a low sugar dessert guide http://www.diabeticlivingonline.com/...ssert-recipes/

| Are you sure you don't like fruit and yogurt? I take two Dannon light yogurt smoothies (they are small) and 1 scoop of chocolate flavored whey protein powder, and blend well in a magic bullet (using the glass that is about 16 oz). Then I add in frozen strawberries until the level is about 3/4 of an inch from the top of the glass and blend again until the frozen strawberries are broken up and the whole thing is smooth. No fat, no sugar (except what is naturally in the strawberries) and high in protein. It is as thick as a very thick milkshake and tastes like a chocolate covered strawberry. Tastes like an indulgence, but it isn't!

| Thank you very much for all of the suggestions!! The jellybean story made me feel so badly for your hubby - poor guy It really isn't fun, I know. Dream - they put me on Glucophage, but I had to stop taking that because I was in the bathroom *constantly* even after the 3 week 'let your body get used to it' ordeal. Thanks again everyone. It's not that I don't like Yogurt and fruit..I actually really am fond of that combo, but when it's the same exact snack every day forever and ever, anything gets old. lol! Thanks all! I will keep all of this in mind, and yes...Xylitol stuff is definitely a no-no...we don't buy anything with that stuff in it. The apple pie thing sounds particularly yummy. I tried baking with Splenda once and it didn't turn out so well (but it tasted fine)...I think I'll try again. Thanks again. :') |

| Concrete - to answer your question, I think it does matter regarding the carbs because I was told that they turn into sugar. =/ I just found out about this diabetes diagnosis and I was too 'duh' to ask my doctor the questions I probably should have. I hate PCOS -_- I have a follow-up in 2 weeks so I will ask her then. =) |

| Sorry you are diabetic, me too It does take some getting used to. Splenda is my best friend, sugar alchols not so much. I go to the bathroom too much and it's terrible LOL I feel for you! I do love the Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom sugar free ice cream sometimes, but if you read the label there is just about the same amount of carbs in that as there is in regular ice cream. So I eat the regular stuff too, just small portions. I was on Metformin (same as Glucophage) and was constantly nauseous. Then I had my doc switch me to the extended release and that was much better. Then it stopped working for me at the max dose so now I'm on Janumet and so far it's been wonderful! Ieven get "lows" soI have to watch my sugar and make sure that I eat. It's all a balanciong act. There is a terrific group that I joined when I first got diagnosed, they really helped me with the practical matters of dealing with diabetes. Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible Super nice people with lots of experience! Anyway, you will figure it all out. I do best on a lower carb diet, but i do eat whole grain things and sometimes a little piece of cake or whatever. Exercise is super important, it will help your body burn up any excess sugar, and you'll be able to eat pretty much anything in moderation Good luck and stay away from the poopie making foods LOL

| Instead of sugar free .... try No sugar added products. I used to eat Edies no sugar added ice cream with no ill side effects. (and I have a pretty picky digestive tract!) My friends mom does this and it's really pretty good. She takes a graham cracker pie crust and puts a mixture of Lite cool whip, light yogurt and fresh fruit, mixes it all up and puts in the pie crust and freezes it. Its actually really good! You really can eat anything, just less of it. and probably only 1 sugar thing a day.
