| Pesco-Vegetarian diet I am really considering changing my lifestyle to this diet. I mean Ive been talking about becoming a vegetarian for almost 8 years. I think it's time to make the leap. I rarely eat meat and never a lot of it. But being from New England I LOVE LOVE LOVE seafood. I could never give up clams, shrimp, haddock, salmon, lobster (don't really like scallops), oysters, sushi, etc... I just love seafood. I completely do not eat hamburger anymore, haven't for probably 7 years now. I eat an occasional steak, but more and more lately I don't enjoy it. I find myself saying 'this steak is gamey tasting' all the time. I keep trying more & more expensive steak to try to get one that I like, when really I just think I don't really like it anymore. I'm bored with chicken... I eat ground turkey in just about every meal I make so my husband and the kids get their meat at least. My husband used to surprise me sometimes and stop and get my favorite steaks for dinner, but lately more & more he's been stopping and getting haddock or shrimp instead. I must be giving off vibes! I don't eat hotdogs, hamburgers, sausage, bacon, ham. Even when I buy for other people I buy the turkey or chicken kind and will nibble here & there. I really think it's time for me to make the leap and get off the meat altogether now. Before I met my husband I ate meat maybe once every 4 days for 1 meal. Usually I knew when I needed protein because I'd get cranky, tired and out of sorts.... then Id realize I hadn't eaten meat in almost a week. Since it was subconsciously I was not getting enough protein, B12 or calcium more than likely. I now eat yogurt almost everyday and buy OJ with calcium. I also drink 1% milk in my coffee daily, so I think Im covered for calcium. The only meat I might miss a little bit is turkey. I am allergic to lentils and am afraid that over time I may develop an allergy to green beans because they are in the same class as lentils. Green beans are my favorite veggie too! Problem is my husband is Italian and his diet is mainly bread, cheese, pasta and meat! A lot of meat! If I am not home to cook for them it's not unusual for him to make the kids hot dogs & hamburgers or sausage on rolls with no veggies at all. Anyone here a pesco-vegetaria or pescatarian? How did you get yourself off eating meat? Was it hard? do you have problems with calcium, iron or protein deficiencies? Any advice or recommendations for me?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm a pescatarian (also ovo-lacto, to be accurate, bc I also eat a bit of dairy/egg), for about 20 yrs now...or so? Giving up meat wasn't all that hard for me, to be honest...not sure why. Although, I still LOVE the smell of bacon -- it's such a yummy smell, to this day. I've never had probs w/ Iron. I do take calcium 2xday, and multis. For protein, I get it from Kashi GoLean (lots of protein in that cereal!), cottage cheese, seafood. I would love to give up milk, which I only have w/ my morning espresso - but I can't find an alternate I'm happy w/ yet...I've tried almond milk, rice milk, soy milk and blah blee.

Anyway, I would like to be a pescatarian too, but my husband insists on eating red meat a couple of times a week. Don't get me wrong, I could live without it, but I DO love it I would like to cut that back to once a month, for his health more than anything, but he's a stubborn cuss Good luck, I think you can do it, you're already mostly there anyway! Much healthier than the typical American's diet

| I think I could live off of baked potatoes (with sour cream of course) and Capresse salad (tomato, mozzarella and basil with balsamic vinegar drizzled on it) with sliced avocados. I think that's my ABSOLUTE favorite meal in the world. I tried artichokes about 2 weeks ago for the first time in a LONG LONG time and my husband & I both HATED them. YUCK!!!! The only part I liked was the soft middle, but it took long to get there and there was not enough of it to be worth making those often. I LOVE edamame, that is soy beans, those are very high in protein... and they are pretty cheap. I could eat those everyday! lol oh and I actually do eat GoLean crunch cereal in my yogurt almost every day. I have a box at home and a box at work. Good idea Anne, it says something like more protein than an egg right on the box!

| I am technically an ovo lacto pesco, but 99.999% of the time I am an ovo lacto veg. Not a seafood fan..except some lake fish... It has been three years. My blood results relating to iron and such are normal...my family is prone to anemia too. I don't eat enough protein bc I tend to be lazy. I'm a dairy fanatic and need to be more moderate about it. I was a total carnivore and have done ok. I do get cravings, but have managed to get through it. The hardest part for me is eating with friends and not being able to have what they are. I don't like drawing attention to my eating habits... Once I put ranch on my salad and then realized it was bacon ranch. Got a terrible tummy ache..either from the pritein tpe itself or my disgust at eating animal accidentally. Be careful about whatever you grab!

My hubs eats meat occ too - and I'll even cook it for him sometimes; I don't want to push my preferences on him either, so that's part of why I don't mind. Has your hubby seen Food Inc or Forks Over Knives yet? My hub learned a ton from both of those. They both have a bit of a different slant, but so educational! Forks Over Knives is really interesting from the point of how our historical diet (typical American diet) has devastated our overall health...and it includes longitudinal studies, which is great. Food Inc may blow your minds in terms of our food industry, and just how messed up/dishonest it is, and how profit rules all...not our health. Both are available at Blockbuster.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I haven't....I will look into this. I wonder if goats are treated better than cows to obtain their milk...do you have any insight?

No I don't. My assumption would be probably not unless you had local farmers that you could deal with who are producing on a smaller scale operation. BTW I too have seen the coco creamers and have seen them on the dry shelves of whole foods as well is in the fridge section. ETA: I've tried it also and it's not bad!

| Another reason I want to give up meat is because I pee A LOT! I mean a lot lot. Every 1/2 hour or so. Its really taking a toll on my life. I do drink a lot of water and I drink coffee in the morning and an iced coffee in the afternoon (thinking of going to 1/2 decaf for this). However I sooooo totally enjoy my ice coffee, like one of life's special treats thats pretty low in calories. I have read that meat can make you pee more. Caffeine can make you pee more and sugar can make you pee more. Well I eat FAR too much sugar and I enjoy my wine, which is like all sugar. I am going to cut back on sugar and stop eating meat ... I am hoping this will help with the frequent urination. I don't know about the coffee though. I can have sometimes up to 3, 10oz cups in the morning! Then get a large ice coffee in the afternoon. I don't even need the caffeine ... I just LOVE coffee!
