| Exercising in the morning vs. evening I have always worked out after work in the evening. I have been debating switching to morning workouts. The reason for this is because I feel like a lot of stuff comes up in the evenings after work and I end up slacking on my workouts. I have also heard exercising in the morning gives you lots of energy throughout the day and one often gets a better workout because they aren't drained from being at work all day. Ok so now to my point! This morning I have made the switch! I am officially a morning workout person. But here is the issue...Last night I kept thinking about how early I had to get up and because of that I didn't have the greatest nights sleep. With that said, my workout went great this morning! Tons of energy and it feels great to have my evening free! BUT...I am tired haha. Have any of you made the switch from PM workouts to AM? What was it like for you? How long did it take you to get adjusted?

| Years ago I went to the gym at 6 am and loved it - the only downfall was that I was ready for bed at 9pm. I am now going after work with my friend and she is not a morning person and we are a big support system for each other. I would prefer mornings, but we both need the motivation!

| I started early morning workouts a few months ago. With a full-time job, two dogs, a teen-age son with tons of activities, and an elderly father . . . I wasn't making my evening workouts. Something ALWAYS got in my way. I'm adjusting to getting up at 5:00 but I'm tired during the day too. I usually make it until 10:00 as opposed to 11:00. I love the group I workout with - but I can tell that I'm tired. My day started at 5:00 today and we didn't get home this evening (swim banquet) until 10pm. I don't think I'm going to make it tomorrow! Ideally, I'd like to do my early morning workouts M-W-F and then try to squeeze a Wednesday evening Pilates and Saturday late morning (10:30) Pilates.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I used to workout in the mornings before work, and I loved it! It was so great to get it done, and not have to fit it in later. Also, some say you'll burn more fat w/ morning w/o bc your body hasn't eaten since the day before. I now workout whenever, but I loved those mornings...even though they were hard to get used to at first.

YT 1000 Club Member | I vary my workout times depending on my work schedule. If I have early morning meetings then I work out in the afternoon and vice versa. I wake up at 4am (even on weekends) and often don't go to bed until well after 11pm. Been doing this since before my daughters were born - they are now 18 - and my body is completely adjusted. I have an added advantage in working from home in that I keep dumbells under my desk and will sneak in some lifting while on telecons .

I've been doing some HIIT training (high intensity interval training); that might be a nice workout for you, bc it's only 20 mins...and you can only do it 2-3x a week (or, too tough on recovery). I do it on the tread, but you can do it other ways too. It kicks your butt.

Right now I am working with a trainer for an hour twice a week. She is kicking my butt!! In between I do spin or eliptical and sometimes yoga...but I always like to change things up because I get bored. 20 minutes sounds fantastic!!!

The first minute, I just walk comfortably..then the 2nd minute, I run - the goal being 90% of my max heart rate (calculated by: 220 - your age) for 1 minute. You do this alternating for 20 minutes. If it's too much for someone, they can instead do a 30 second sprint, w/ 1 minute recovery, and alternate that way. For someone in great shape...they can do 1 min at the fast speed, and recover for only 30 seconds. In addition to the 1:1 ratio I do, if I'm feeling really great - I do the 1st 2 minutes as described above; but then the next minute - I kick up the speed by an add'l 1mph, but only do it for 30 seconds, then recover for 30 seconds. On the next minute, I go back to 1min/1min off. Hope that made sense, oy. There are some really cool published studies out there about doing a 2-3x week HIIT training vs. a more traditional work-out like 30-40 mins, 5x a week.

I am going to try it!! It makes total sense. Thank you for taking the time to explain!! I honestly feel great working out in the AM - but if I ever can't make it to the gym in the morning, this is a great workout for the evening...nice and quick!! I do find that after morning workouts I am starving!! lol.

| I use to go in the evenings only. The gym is always so packed at night though, so I am now attempting to get there early as much as possible. I'm not a morning person so that is not always easy for me. Some people think that working out early boosts your metabolism for the day. Makes sense but I use to be really fit when I use to go in the evenings all the time. It probably doesn't really matter as long as you go. |

As a Mom-early morning suit my schedule right now, though I am late for work on those days. Luckily, my company isn't too strict about that as they know I stay late. I will say that the early morning workouts have become absolutely addictive. I don't know if it's the charismatic trainer or the group of people that always show up - but I really enjoy it and feel guilty if I don't go. We do a mixture of everything - TRX, Kickboxing, steps, strength training; jump rope (which I hate). It's something different each time.
