Donating YT 500 Club Member | What to do if you loose the title to your car? Ugh... I have searched high and low and I can not find my title to my car. It is payed off. But currently I am looking to sell it and get something new so I need the title. What do I do? Do I try and obtain a duplicate through the state it is registered in or who I had it financed through previously? Thanks for all your help!

| Well I used to be a title clerk at a car dealership. First you will need to get a lien release from the previous lien holder. Then you will have to apply for a duplicate title through the Department of Motor Vehicle. Not sure if it is called that in your area. They should be able to tell you if you need to do anything else. Good luck!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Yes, I would think you need to apply for a duplicate title from the state that originally titled the vehicle. We've done this before, seems like it took a couple of weeks. At the time everything was through mail, now you could probably do it on-line.

| When I settle a total loss claim and the party has lost their title, I just tell them to go get a duplicate title at the DMV. Hasn't ever been a problem, or at least no one has complained about it
