Animal Smiley 049 Hey, Y'all

It's been a while since I've been on YT. Sorry about that, but life has had me diverted a bit. That, and it's election season and I've been arguing politics on a talk forum. What can I say, I'm a political junkie.

Things are going well with me and my crew. It's the same chaos as usual LOL, but that's my normal. By 'crew' I mean the Yorkies, birds and the rescue cats and now, as of yesterday, my newest addition.....a big ole' dog we call Buck. Yahoo!!

I met Buck last week while coming home from taking my wife to work. He was hobbling around the neighborhood and it was obvious he had been hit by a car. Being only a couple of blocks from home, I went and got some food to try to entice him to come to me. Well, I had to find him again, which wasn't too hard. He was moving kinda slow and sniffing around in yards.

I stopped and tried to get him to come to me, but he kept hobbling off to another yard. Finally, after about 4 tries, I got him cornered a bit. He tried to get away, but when he put his rear leg down, he just collapsed in the road.

Anyway, at that point he had no choice so I approached him. I let him sniff me and put the food down. He gobbled it up, right there in the middle of the road. After a few minutes, I was able to get him off to the side and in the grass.

I asked a few neighbors there if anyone knew the dog and no one did. I got a man to call Animal Control. The officer checked and he was micro-chipped. Okay, so off he went to the Humane Society and I was thinking he would be re-united with his owner.

That didn't happen. The Humane Society made repeated attempts to contact the owner, but they wouldn't answer the phone calls. So, on last Monday I went to check on him. The folks at the HS said they had to give the owner 5 days to claim the dog before they could take possession and do anything.

That 5 days was up on Wednesday and I went back to the HS. They said they had no way to diagnose him and he would be put down. I said I was was willing to see if he could be fixed, but being the afternoon before Thanksgiving, there was nothing I could do then. So things were put on hold until yesterday.

Okay, (you still with me?) I went and took him to the vet. The vet x-rayed him and his right rear femur was broke clean in two. Now, at this point he was still the HS's dog. I went back there and had them sign him over to me and the vet agreed to do the surgery that same day. Who would of thought THAT would happen?

So Buck had his surgery and I was able to bring him home. He is resting well and the Yorkies are well, they're getting used to him being here LOL. Buck has about 8 weeks recovery time on this injury.

I say 'this injury' because the vet discovered his left rear knee is messed up, too, and will need surgery. We go back in 2 weeks for suture removal and the vet wants to do the other surgery as soon as his right leg is stable enough to carry him. We also found out last night that 3 of his teeth are broken, so that's another issue.

Oh, about Buck. He's a mutt. The HS listed him as Chow/Retriever mix, but there's some Shepherd and some Bulldog in him, too. He's about 60 pounds now, but he's skinny. He looks to be about 1 1/2 to 2 years old and is neutered.

Sorry I can't post pics today. My camera batteries are dead, but I'll re-post with pics ASAP.

So, that's what's up with me. We're very happy to have Buck and look forward to getting him back to 100%. It's gonna take a while, but he seems happy and is taking it in stride so far.

Buck was so lucky to be hobbling around when you were going past! I would say I'm so glad you helped him, but I knew you would not leave this poor boy. You're officially the "Thanksgiving Hero"!

Hoping poor Buck is feeling better soon. He couldn't have found a better home.

Hi Woogie Man! So nice to hear from you. Poor Buck...it's sad that the HS had to make him wait five more days with his broken leg. But, it's SO wonderful that you found Buck and that you and your wife have such huge hearts. Buck's luck sure has taken a change in direction! I can't wait to see pics of him.

About 9 1/2 years ago we found a dog wondering around. Clearly hungry and thirsty, with fleas too. Long story short, we named her Sandy. She looks like a chow/shepherd/husky/??? mix. She's a good big dog and we love her lots.

Oh, I could have never just left him to his fate. After all, I had met him and we were buddies by then.

I had NO idea things would move so fast yesterday. It left us scrambling to accommodate him, but we got things worked out.

He's had a little trouble figuring out how to pee, but he finally was able to manage a slight squat. He's been a good boy so far. No messes in the house. He's held it until I take him out. I have a mop on standby.

The sad thing is that I got up close and personal with the HS, though. When we went to see Buck on Wednesday, I took a bag of treats and went up and down the row of cages and handed treats out. This was not in the adoption area, but in the back. There were 3 other dogs in there with leg injuries and well, they have run out of time. The need is so great and the resources just aren't there. I hope to be able to get more involved once I get my plate cleared a little.

About Buck's leg. The vet gives him an 80-90 % chance for a full recovery. He says it's likely we'll never know it was broken. The knee on the other leg is a torn ligament/tendon and we hope to get that fixed in the next couple of weeks. We honestly didn't know it was injured, but the vet found it while manipulating it after he was put under. Now that I look, it's obvious that his knee doesn't lock, but throws back at an unnatural angle (probably not saying that right). Anyway, we hope that a good repair can be made with that, too.

Oh, and it's so nice to 'see' you all again!!

That was such a sweet thing to do and it sounds just like you. I'm betting he'll be the best dog ever! So, after about four or five months, you're going to have a new buddy hanging around for the yorkies to boss around. Take care of yourself and I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.

We feel lucky to have Buck. It's like Christmas came early this year.

Also, a big thanks goes out to Dr.Geotes. He didn't even see Buck until about 1:30 yesterday and told me if I could get things straightened out with the HS that he could do the surgery after he got back from his lunch. And this isn't even my regular vet! He didn't know me at all!

This was just one of things meant to be and there seemed to be a bigger hand guiding all this. I'm thrilled to have been a part of it.

Earlier today, I had taken Buck out for a potty break and let the Yorkies all meet him properly in the living room on our way back in. It was funny...they didn't know what to make of his tail wagging back and forth and kept ducking out of its way, LOL. That won't be their only surprise, though. Buck slobbers and it's only a matter of time before one of them gets hit with a big ole wet slobber-bomb at the water dish!

Ha-ha! I can just picture the yorkies ducking to miss being wiped out by the tail!

Buck probably thinks he has gone to heaven.

If they weren't so danged nosy and trying to sniff his butt, Buck's tail wouldn't be a hazard. It WAS funny....Buck's tail was constantly wagging and it was...sniff, duck, sniff, duck, sniff.....sigh,they never learn.
