Question Glass cooktops

We're about to close on a new house and it has a glass cooktop. I've never used one before - always had a gas stove. My husband heard that we need to use different cookware (stainless steel) but I can't find any that are nonstick. Does anyone have a glass cooktop? And what kind of cookware do you use? If you really like a particular brand I'd really appreciate your recommendation.

Thank You!

I've been using glass cook tops for a few years now and I never heard of that . Not saying it isn't true though. But just to let you know I haven't replaced any of my cookware and have iron skillets, WOKs and non stick pans as well as some cheap sauce pans I picked up from good will.

Good luck with your new home and congrats! I just bought mine too

Do you mean glass cooktop or induction cook top? A glass cooktop utilizes a heated coil and you can use whatever kind of cookware you want. An induction cooktop is also "glass" but the heat source is basically magnetic which is why you need reactive metal cookware

Hey - Congtratulations on your new house!

Oh good - I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend 'more' money on cookware - there's always so many other things ya need.

Thanks for replying so fast!

I have been using a glass top electric stove for about 10 years. I use Revereware stainless steel pots and pans. They're stainless steel inside and after all these years still look brand new. I was told you had to make sure the bottom of your pans were perfectly flat so that the entire surface makes contact with the heat.

Yes, a flat surface helps! My one wobbly pan is good for making the egg cook perfect in one part of the pan haha

And thanks for the congrats!

What? Oh no! I just know it's a Zacor - which I had never heard of before. Well, Thank You - that's good to know. I'll have to see if I can find a model number and check it out. Or will it say something on the glass?

Maybe it's a Dacor? Professional Cooktops - Gas & Electric - Dacor Kitchen Appliances

They have a few products, maybe you will recognize it?

I used to have the whole set of Revereware - but gave them away a long time ago when they came out with all that silverstone/nonstick stuff. Do they make anything with nonstick? lol!

That's what hubby said about the pans - that they had to have a flat bottom.

Thanks you guys - I appreciate the input!

Carmen - I know - I prefer gas, too. When we do change all the appliances I will switch the stove top to gas (propane). One good thing about being here in Vegas is that we've never had a power outage so we're ok on that one.

We just switched to a glass top earlier this year (We live in Navy housing and they swapped out our stove) from a regular electirc stove. I still use all of the same pots and pans, some revereware, some corningware. I did have a big non-stick skillet that had a warpped bottom; it didn't work well on the glass top. The other thing about your pans is that the bottoms should be smooth as weel as flat. If they have any burrs on them it can scratch the glass top.
Hopefully you can get a copy of the owners manual for the stove/oven. I know there are certain cleaners that are ok and some that are not.
One last word of caution, the burners stay hot/warm for a little while after being turned off.

I had a glass cooktop for 10 years at my last house. Loved, loved, loved it. It was so easy to keep clean if you wiped up everytime after use and didn't let things dry on there.

Yes, you do need to use cookware that is completely flat on the bottom. I used Cusinart stainless steel cookware from Macy's. They had regular and non-stick varieties of each size. I still have the cookware, so it was well worth the investment (although now they've changed the handle & lid styles...)

Unfortunatey, I'm a horrible cook and my son cooked more than anyone. So at the new house he requested a gas cooktop and an electric wall oven. Now with the gas cooktop I just burn food quicker than I used to

Congratualations on your new home. I think moving and decorating a new place is sooo much fun

haha I have a glass cooktop, I use regular pots & pans.... however my inlaws have a glass top stove and they went and bought a whole new set of cookware for their stove. My glass top probably does not look as nice as thiers, but even with my pots & pans (I have very expensive Caphalon pots & pans so I was not getting rid of them bc of the stovetop) the food still cooks fine... the top of the stove gets minimally scratched a bit more probably and the things that boil over don't come off for months!
