| Getting rid of dogs.... I think I am going to drop my 2 teenage kids off at the fire station. I really didn't think it through when I had them and I just dont think I can take care of them anymore because I have to work, and take care of the dogs and they are just too much hassle. I mean I love them and wish I could keep them but they need love and attention and food and clothes and just too much of my time. They are totally not what I expected in kids. They refuse to clean up after themselves, they are mouthy and I just can't take it anymore. Hopefully the fire station will be able to find them a good forever home where someone else will love them and take care of them. I realize that dogs aren't kids, I am just soooo sick and tired of hearing people give their dogs away because they need too much or bark or want to be petted or want to be played with. Its ridiculous!

Owned by Bella & Tibbs Donating Member | Hahaha!!! I know you mean this post very seriously but it made me lol! I have a 3 year old skin baby that is not like any kid I have ever seen...he is a tornado and has an attitude you just can't stop!!! I love him more than life but I must admit I have been threatening to "give him to mamaw" since he started this "phase" as my mom calls it!!! My dog's are so much easier to deal with!!! I agree when you get a dog it is for life and you agree to take care of it forever! I mean I understand that there are some situations where people have to give up there babies but just dumping them because they are to lazy to work with them is just ridiculousness!

Now I have an empty nest and 1 yorkie who gives me unconditonal love, doesn't drink, drive, drink and drive, leave dirty clothes, dishes, cups and stuff all around the house. I feel blessed. Actually, my kids are grown and pretty good now...but they don't live with me!

| I think it is best in the situation where someone has already considered getting rid of dogs to the point of posting on here to get them to be responsible and rehome them or give them to a rescue rather than take to a shelter. I know alot of people consider their dogs kids but they are really not the same thing and not everyone feels that way so you have to handle them with that in mind.

| I too think that once an owner has decided to give up a dog ~ that it's probably in the dog's best interest to have another owner. One that really wants him/her. I just wish so many people didn't give them up at the drop of a hat.

My kids take a lot of time driving them to school and football practice and work and cheer and to buy school clothes and to the movies with their friends, etc. I knew when I had kids it would be a job-a lifetime commitment. To me, dogs are the same way. You make a commitment to love them and take care of them and their needs, even if you are dead tired because you had to be up at 4am and your office got broken into and things are crazy and hectic. You take care of them. You dont just give them away because they "aren't what I expected". I see it so much here and other places and it's just sickening. It makes my heart ache that there are so many people out there that just don't care what they're doing to an animal (or a child-don't get me started on moms who leave their babies in dumpsters!!). I guess I just needed to vent

While I feel a commitment to a dog is just like a commitment to any other family member, I realize that not everyone feels the same way. I agree that once things have gotten to such a point that giving up the dog is an option, it might be in the dog's best interest. I'd hate to think of any dog being caged for an extreme amount of hours, possibly mistreated and unloved because the owner is just sick of dealing with it. If you really don't want it, find someone who does.

| To be honest...I think that it is true of both dogs and human kids. The minute you decide you don't want to deal with them, then maybe you should give them up...I'm not for a moment saying that humans/dogs are the same...But what I am saying is that there is a stigma to giving a child up for adoption. I would rather see that baby/child go to a home that is prepared to deal with the hard job of parenting, than see someone keep the child just because they think they have to! To many young children are damaged by poor parenting in the early years because someone has been convinced that "keeping" the baby is the right thing to do. As for people who give up their dog at the "drop of a hat"...those are the people who should never have gotten a dog anyways, and the dog will likely be better off in a new home. I wonder what the statistics would indicate in a study people/pet owners who are willing to give up their dogs, and whether these are the same people who seem to walk into and out of other committments so easily...i.e. parenting, marriage...There are certainly those amongst us (not the majority thank goodness!) that believe that their needs should always come first regardless of what other committments they might have taken on...pet ownership, marriage, parenting etc. Now...there is my rant for the day |

| Have you all seen the latest episode of Teen Mom on MTV (the show that's sweeping ratings and young ppl)? One of the teen moms, Farrah, gets a dog on the spur of the moment from a pet shop. I guess being a single teen mom with a 2 year old was not enough work. She had the dog for a little while, couldn't get it potty trained, and gave it to a neighbor. Wonderful example for young ppl to see! I have no skin kids (and will not), so my furbabies have been spoiled children. They were a committment I kept until the end, and even then I was right there trying to make their passing easier for them. I do not understand the lack of committment to these living things, but I do agree w the posters that said sometimes it really is for the better. These poor dogs that "drew the wrong straw" and got ppl who did not honor their committment to them deserve better than to be neglected. I guess they could take the "Casey Anthony Way Out of Parenting" and throw your child (furbaby) in a garbage bag into the woods (jk).
