| Help...I'm on Fire Ok, not really I was only able to get about 2-3 hours of sleep last night and spent the other several hours eating Tums in the recliner and dealing with heartburn. It was another attack that literally makes it hard to take a breath. I have come to terms with the fact this is a side effect of pregnancy but I am wondering if any of you have advice on how to deal with this. PLEASE! share if you do. I am not eating large meals or anything right before bed time. I sleep with several pillows and have my head elevated. I feel like I am doing what I can to prevent it and it is still occuring. Are there remedies to ease or stop it once it has started? |

| Maybe it has something to do with what you're eating?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | This is a side effect of pregnancy, and eating low fat helps, but sometimes even doing that doesn’t work. Are you allowed to take Pepcid during pregnancy? It really works. You just take one a day and it cures it for 24 hours. Tums are more of a temporary fix.

| Having suffered heartburn a couple times, I'm sorry for you and hope you can find a remedy. I don't have any advice. Mine was caused by too much diet coke and spicy foods. Hope you get some relief!

| This sounds familiar. I think my mom said she had heartburn horribly when carrying me. Could only eat one food - a certain type of ice cream maybe. Well, that's all I got for this one.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Carbonated drinks can cause it, but research indicates spicy foods aren't as responsible as once thought. We burp the spicy foods and associate the taste with the heartburn, but it's usually the fat not the spices. Many spicy foods are high fat.

| I have thought about that, but yesterday for example, I had toast for breakfast- one piece of cheese pizza for lunch- and a bowl of cereal for dinner around 6-ish. I snacked on animal crackers throughout the day and only had water. I was burning like I had stuffed myself with spicy nachos. Quote:
OTC Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac Tums, Rolaids, Riopan, Mylanta, Maalox, Maalox Plus, and Mylanta II Everyone tells me they had such heartburn with reflux. I have yet to experience reflux that goes up into my neck. My burning is like I have swallowed hot coals and they are setting in my stomach.

Thanks for suggesting the Pepcid, I am glad to hear it works. The Tums just aren't cutting it.

| That is interesting. I think in my case though, it was sodium overload...brought on mainly by the diet coke, compounded by overeating/bloat (carbonation didn't help that either). The fat was probably a factor, okay.

| Maybe the tomato sauce on the pizza was too acidic? If high fat is the culprit, pizza is pretty high in fat, and even though you didn't really eat that much throughout the day...that might've been the culprit. I don't blame you though...I love pizza!

| I'm pretty sure I've heard animal crackers can cause heartburn, oddly enough? My mom AND dad have pretty bag heartburn, I guess it's genetic. I've started to get it more and more. But my mom says the oddest things will give her heartburn. It all started, for her, when she got pregnant with me. Pizza definitely won't do you any favors. lol. My mom really likes Zantec. She's always got those pills as well as Tums on her.

| Here ya go this is taken from familydoctor.org http://familydoctor.org/online/famdo...rders/087.html What factors add to heartburn? Many things can make heartburn worse. I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Cheese pizza is very high in fat; also, even buttered toast can cause it. Dry toast is recommended if you're susceptible to this. I never experienced the acid reflux just the burning. Keep a food dairy and see what works for you, but if Pepcid is safe; I’d be tempted to take it. Many people say they can eat whatever they want,if they take Pepcid, although that’s probably not too smart. You’re making a person, and it's important that you get proper nourishment. Your body will feed you first though, and you're baby gets any leftover nutrients.

| May have been the pizza. Wierd though, we had Pizza one night last week and I ate 2 pieces-nothing. I know tomatos and orange juice have caused it in the past so I avoid those as well as other acidic foods. Animal Crackers!?!? Nooooo. I am loving those Be my luck though. lol I started Zantac tonight. I am feeling some relief so, hopefully (fingers crossed) I will sleep tonight and this can be my magic pill. |
