| Just diagnosed with sleep apnea I was diagnosed with sleep apnea yesterday. Now I need to choose a cpap machine and a mask. Can anyone offer recommendations on these? What features should I be looking for in a machine? What questions should I be asking the medical equipment provider? Any suggestions or advice would be very appreciated. Bonny

| Hi Bonny- Sorry to hear this. My brother was diagnosed with this and he didn't think he could sleep with the apparatus on so he opted for surgery and said he was glad he did. He sleeps great now and said the surgery was quick and painless.

I don't know exactly what the surgery involves, but my doctor didn't recommend it for me. I don't know if I'm just not bad enough or what, but he feels strongly I should start out with the cpap. I think I'll google it and see what all is involved with the surgery, though. The mask they used during the sleep study was actually much more comfortable than I thought it would be - not what I expected it would feel like at all. I'm just dreading the thoughts of having to deal with the tubing, detatching and then re-attaching everything when I have to get up during the night, and having ugly strap marks on my face every morning.

| I wish you the very best Bonny in whatever you decide is best for you. I use to get those marks from my scuba mask so I know just what you mean

| BiPap and Cpap machines have come a long way!! They are really tiny nowadays AND much more quieter!! The masks are much more people friendly too!! They make the gel masks now that are more comfy. It will take some getting use to, i'm sure. You may find yourself not getting up in the middle of the night as much as you use to, due to the reason that your REM sleep will not be disturbed now. Best wishes and i'm glad you'll be getting a safe and restful sleep now!!

I wonder if it was a gel mask I wore during the sleep study? I bet it was, the part that rests against the skin was very soft and flexible. I should just call the sleep clinic and ask them what kind of mask it was. As for how loud the machines are - I couldn't say. The air conditioner was pretty loud and it ran all night. It was so cold in that room my feet froze most of the night.

| Have you gotten a second opinion?...the reason I ask is because I was diagnosed with it last December, but what made me suspicious is that the doctor didn't give me options he went straight to the machine, not only that, but I'm pretty skinny, and that is more common in people not as skinny as me( I'm 100 pounds), anyways, I read on several forums that you have options, when asked the doctor about those options he gave me the run around, so I went for a second opinion and what the otherndoctor told me I had was restless leg syndrome...not that is a good thing to have, but I don't have to sleep with one of those machines that I tried out a couple of nights while I was in the sleep lab. Good luck on what you decide to do.

| My ex-husband has sleep apnea. We know this because it would wake me up when he'd stop breathing. He uses the Cpap and it was my understanding that there are two types of sleep apnea, one where your passage way narrows & the other is your brain simply not telling you to breathe. He has both & I think the machine was his option because the surgery cannot correct the apnea due to your brain activity. The machine didn't bother him really, but it did take a few nights to get used to it. It never bothered me at all. This is all based on my opinion & my one experience. I hope you can find a solution that works for you, Bonny. We could both see a big change in him once he was getting restful sleep, I hope the same goes for you.

I've been diagnosed with very sleep apnea. It's considered severe when you stop breathing more than 30 times per hour. I stop breathing more than 75 times per hour. The sleep study also determined I have moderate restless leg syndrome. So, lucky me - I get to have both problems. I had no idea I had RLS but those symptoms fit me also.
