Yorkie Talker | Grooming age? At what age is it is when our puppy may need his first grooming? We are new to Yorkies? I don't want him to look like "a big boy". I like the puppy look, but he is getting pretty shaggy. And as long as I'm here....what causes liver shunts? |

| When they start looking like an out-of-control dustmop, then it is time for a little touch-up. I prefer mine to be pretty short. She's more comfortable and it's a lot easier, too. Good luck!

| My boys got their first puppy cut at 11months. It was a bit sad for me because although they looked GREAT, they looked like big boys and not puppies anymore! I don't think anything causes liver shunt, I think they are born with it.... I am not 100% sure though, I'd search that on here, I'm sure you'll find TONS of info on it!

| I got Teddy groomed at 4 1/2 months...he was definitely shaggy looking. I told the groomer I liked his puppy coat and wasn't ready to part with it. So he just cleaned up his face and legs, trimmed his body a little bit, tipped his ears and of course gave him a sanitary cut. He still very much looks like a puppy. Just find a groomer that knows the breed. My groomer owns a yorkie himself so he understood what I wanted. Make sure you tell the groomer exactly what you want.

| From my understanding, liver shunts can be caused by different things. One form of liver shunt is a leftover fetal blood vessel that carries bloodflow around the liver (so to speak) and another form is an abnormal blood vessel that forms around the liver because of liver disease. Bloodflow in vessels while in the womb is different than after you are born. There are also shunts in the heart that exist because the mother is breathing for the baby and the baby does not breathe on its own. After a child is born, the communication stops/grows shut. Sometimes, this communication stays open, causing a blood vessel defect. This is probably a very simplistic explanation. Maybe someone else can explain it better, but I gave it a shot. |
