Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Anyone work/volunteer for the homeless? I'm thinking about volunteering with the homeless. Does anyone have experience?

| We have a program here at work that focuses solely on helping homeless families. I have a few homeless families in my program. What did you have in mind?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I think that is wonderful. I thought about it and I think it would be too depressing for me. It takes a lot for me to go each week to the animal shelter. I think it is such a great way to help your community. My neighbor use to go once a week to where they fed the homeless and said it was so rewarding.

| My Mother did for several years and she found it very rewarding. My Aunt and Uncle do to, and have for many years. My family has always been involved, in one way or another, with helping the homeless or less fortunate. |

| In 2009 I volunteered as a nurse at the 3 day Stand Down for Homeless Veterans in San Diego. It was eye opening to see what has become of many of those who have served and very rewarding. I'd do it again if I have the chance to get back to San Diego. Last year I volunteered with Project Medishare to treat the people of Haiti who were injured in the earthquake. It made me grateful for all I have.

I know homeless people come from all walks of life, but I'm particularly interested in those who have mental illnesses. My favorite job was back when I was 21-ish and I managed a group home for chronically mentally ill adults (almost all of them had schizophrenia). I want to volunteer at SOMEthing, and helping homeless people has always appealed to me. I would love to help an animal shelter, but I just can't handle it. I'm also thinking about walking dogs for a rescue, but I may not even be able to handle that. I'm much better at handling people issues, bc there are often more resources for them. I hope that doesn't sound cold...it's just how I've felt my whole life (very sensitive toward animals). Anyway, long answer , but I think this shows kinda where I'm coming from...

I've actually been called a few times by my coworkers when they need shoes for a preteen girl. I'm always happy to give up one of my newer pairs of shoes.

I've volunteered washing & sorting clothes, distributing food items, taking blankets & coats to commerical cleaning facilities and then picking them up, recording & processing donations, etc. But, I confess many of the homeless seem to have mental health issues & it just freaks me out.

| I think you're an exceptional person to do such a thing! Good luck in your venture! A little goes a LONG way with the less fortunate. I don't really have anything other than that to offer except for the fact that I used to go to a homeless shelter to help serve meals...Only reason I quit going was because I got so busy raising kiddos. I have recently applied to volunteer at any of our local animal shelters. I've already wondered if I can handle it. I'm gonna push myself though, because I REALLY want to give something back to these wonderful creatures that give us SO much and only want so little in return.. Oh, another thing, I USED to do the "extreme couponing" only I was not so extreme, and I am going to start doing this again and giving all the "extras" to our Church for the needy families. Maybe that is a suggestion as to how you could give back also.. IDK? Just a thought. Couponing isn't for everyone.

| I'm in graduate school for social work and my internship this past school year has been at a nonprofit agency that works with the homeless population. It has been such a rewarding experience and I have learned so much. I never thought I would want to work with the homeless for my actual job, but the past year may have changed my mind. I guess we will see. We have a lot of homeless service agencies in Charlotte and most places always need volunteers. I think you would love it, especially if you find a place that specializes in mental health and homelessness.
