| Dr. Oz info regarding Mammograms and Dental xrays for women A friend of mine just sent this to me via email. I thought I would pass it along. Wednesday, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck. Many dentists don't bother to use it. Also, there is something called a "thyroid guard" for use during mammograms. By coincidence, I had my yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. I asked why it wasn't routinely used. Answer: "I don't know. You have to ask for it." Well, if I hadn't seen the show, how would I have known to ask? Someone was nice enough to forward this to me. I hope you pass this on to your friends and family. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm totally shocked at this, I've known a couple of people with thyroid cancer, and this really makes me wonder. You certainly should never have to ask for the guard, who would know that? Thanks for the warning.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | wow i can't believe some doctors don't give you the thyroid protector for x-rays. I always make sure I'm protected. I'm used to the equipment because i've taken hundreds of x-rays as a vet tech and I always make sure every part of me is as covered as it can get. I also make sure to put my arms and hands behind the apron as well if i can.

| I had to have my entire thyroid gland removed due to a fast-growing multi-nodular goiter with suspicious nodules. They turned out to contain some of those "pre-cancerous" lesions. I wondered if it was due to the NUMEROUS xrays I had on my neck before & after a surgery to fuse my cervical vertebrae at C6/7. I worried a little at the time that they seemed to be doing a LOT of xrays. I am thinking that could well be the cause of my thyroid problems. Good heads-up advice!

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I had half of my thyroid gland removed because of a goiter - they didn't suspect cancer but did find a microscopic encapsulated cancer. Wishing they had just taken the whole thing. But leading up to it, I had lots and lots of dental work. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? And just a couple of weeks ago, I had a dozen xrays in the same spot in the course of an exam, root canal, and apicoectomy. Hmm... |

| Call me irresponsible - but I refuse to have any type of xrays done - especially mamograms. To me (where there is no breast cancer in our family history), it is not worth the risk.

| No I do have dental ones done but now will definitely limit them. Only have them done I'd something in my mouth is questionable. |

| Interesting, I always thought the cover they put on you at the dentist in case you were pregnat. Never could understand why they kept putting on me. LOL Gosh I am so stupid. Now I will make sure they use the flap. A good friend of mine just had a mamo in Nov. Just found a week or so ago a place on her breast. Did find out it is Cancer, not sure what kind yet. Big question is why didn't it show up on mamo? She felt something while in shower and made her yearly appointment didn't tell Dr about it, wanted to see if she felt it. When Dr. was doing the breast exam and come to that area she said Pat when was your last mamo? Duh it's in my records right in front of you. 4 months ago. Bad thing about all this, her husband is an attorney. He is wanting a copy of the mamo. |

| Im in the process of getting a dental implant and have had a BUNCH of dental xrays in the last 2 weeks!!! AARRGGGG My friend had thyroid cancer and they removed her thyroid. Only thing is, she is too young to have had mammograms and she never had much major dental work to be repetitively exposed to dental xrays. HHhmmmmm
