Exclamation Ignorant College Student

So, this video is circulating like madness. People are contacting the dean and chancellor of the school hoping disciplinary actions be taken. I'm just curious to see what you guys think and what you think is the appropriate measure to be taken? Expulsion or Suspension? This has become a huge deal across college campuses in CA...

Wow!
If she was the well mannered polite girl she claims her mother raised her to be then this video wouldn't exist.
Is that low cut top appropriate for college? (Oh wait this is UCLA!)

Maybe suspend her while she attends a special class on race relations.

Well... I think this girl is an airhead and I don't like what she says... but she does have a First Amendment right to voice her opinion. I don't think it would be appropriate to punish her just because I disagree with what she says and the way she says it.

I agree!

Wow first if she is going into Political Science she better learn diplomacy regarding different cultures. Secondly she better learn how to concentrate when other things are going on because that is the way the real world operates. Just seems like another self centered person who has an unrealistic sense of entitlement. She does have a point though about not talking on a cell phone while in the library. Other than that she is off base.

well... I agree about following the rules of the library. I may also agree about the uses of laundry centers if the family members are doing laundry other than the students.

What I don't agree with is how she said the message.

I live in Miami, if you are not Latin - Spanish speaking - it can be difficult at times. I have had my days when I want to shout "it is America you guys"!!
But... I calm down and think how I would feel if I had to move to another country. Many had to. That is the foundation of what America is..but please don't make us like your homeland-- well maybe the food --yum!
I think the key word is respect.

I hope you don't mind me editing your post. You wanna see worse? At SMC (close to UCLA) you will find girls in booty shorts (I mean half their hinney is falling out) and stripper heels with a low cut top.

I agree with you both! My biggest pet peeve was people who dragged their feet or wore flip flops when I was in college. WHY? Because as I was trying to study the flip flop sound, or people dragging their feet would be a huge distraction. But, I took Buster Brown's advice (so to speak) and just learned to deal. I get my mp3 player out, play my study mix, and move on with my day.

While she does have the right to say whatever she wants, she did make one mistake. She singled out UCLA and she but UCLA in a negative light. People will think, "So this is what Angelinos really think?" UCLA will not take this lightly and there is a code of conduct students must follow. I'm sure she violated the code of conduct, and it won't be long until the Dean contacts her.

Freedom of speech, can't really get mad at her for expressing it. If she was a comedian people would have applauded her. Although her views are completely idiotic and makes her political science degree appear to be a joke, you cannot really get mad at the fool. The low cut top is probably what got it all of the hits anyway, it is one of the magical secrets of youtube.

As if she's ever been in a library long enough to register cell phone usage based on race. Secondly, given that she stated that the library is mostly full of Asians, it would make sense that "Asians" will be caught on the phone in the library with higher probability than anyone else. The University that I attend is mostly white, and guess what...every time I catch someone talking on their phone in the library...is white! Shocker!

Although I understand that she's entitled to "free speech" it's this type of mental heuristic that breeds discrimination. Just like when people look at statistics regarding prison populations and observe that most inmates are minorities they conclude that most if not all minorities are criminals. When in fact, it is an artifact of poverty. I'm not saying that everyone who is poor commits a crime (I grew up extremely poor), but it's just that on average those that are poor are more likely to commit a crime than those that are wealthier (and it just so happens that a greater percentage of minorities are poorer/earn less). And THAT might not even be true either since those that are wealthier can afford a lawyer that can keep them out of jail. So either way sorry for rambling I just feel really strongly about this.

I think there's a huge difference between a comedian who makes a joke out of something serious in order to bring an issue to the table that is overlooked/makes people uncomfortable to demonstrate how silly certain patterns of thinking are versus someone who honestly feels that way. While both might be saying the same thing, their messages are different.

Hilarious. How did she get into UCLA???? You know why UCLA is full of asians? bc it's a school for smart people.

BTW, didn't realize she was a Native.

Also, the 1st amendment actually protects the people from the government from censoring what we say. You can't just flap your mouth and claim 1st amendment protection. So when someone says something completely idiotic or totally off and they claim 1st amendment, not only are they being an a-hole they also don't know what they heck they are talking about.

That is what I was saying (in my mangeled way) .. the lack of respect.

Yes, it is difficult to adjust to different cultures.. but weren't all of our families from other countries.. also.. in Miami's case .. a lot of people moved here because of survival.. not because they really wanted to leave their country.

Ha ha, I love it!

What's she's really ticked off about is many professors grade on a curve, and her strong c- turns to failing when the Asian students marks are factored in, so now she has to go to the library, where she hopes she'll be hit be some sort of epiphany while reading about arguments and theories and "stuff". Oh and this isn't meant for her "friends," it's for random Asians she doesn’t know. Use "American manners"! Yes, Americans are so known for their manners worldwide. Why are the rudest people in the world always lecturing others about manners? I just hope this turns out to be a hoax, and their girl really didn't get into college. She gives big busted blonds a bad name!

I'm from South Florida too and I don't think the problem is adapting, it's more an artifact of convenience. Where I grew up, there was not a single place that I would go where everyone didn't speak Spanish. The grocery store workers, your local Wal-Mart, even the DMV etc. When my mother and father first moved here they both had different "career paths" so to speak. My mother was mostly a stay at home mom because raising her children was her top priority while my dad worked as a mechanical engineer for a company. To run errands my mother never needed to learn English. Also, because all of the teachers at my schools were mostly Spanish speakers, she did not need to learn English in order to communicate with my teachers about my performance in school. My father on the other hand because of the nature of his work and the clients, was forced into a situation where he needed to know English in order to communicate. When times were more difficult and my mom wasn't able to stay at home, she worked in factories, cleaning hospitals, etc all jobs that did not require English speaking skills. So, I now have two parents one who speaks English pretty well (my father) and a mother who partially understands English but does not speak it well. My mother is an extremely hardworking woman in the sense that when she couldn't afford to stay at home with me, she would work one or two jobs if necessary and gave it her all, but given the circumstances (and quite frankly lack of time and transportation) she did not have a chance to devote her time into learning English. Especially since she never struggled with not knowing it. So, what I'm trying to say is that I think most people are rational and will do what is necessary to thrive. Because Miami has such a large Spanish speaking community they do not find it to be necessary to speak the language. I think that given the choice if learning the language was costless (in other words you were exposed to the language on a daily basis in your surrounding area) most South Floridians would speak English fluently. I don't think not knowing speaking English is a way to reject American culture, it's just an artifact of the neighborhood and surrounding communities. If my family had moved to another city I'm pretty sure that both my mother and father would speak English well.
