Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I'm freaking out! I'm scheduled to go for a root canal ( no big deal) and an apicoectomy ( big deal to me) in 3 hours. I've done enough research to know intellectually that the surgery will not be painful. The day or two afterward can hurt, but my endodontist has prescribed Vicodin and will send me home with ice packs. I've had several major surgeries and generally tolerate pain extremely well... Except when it's in my mouth. I took Tallulah to Yorkie Camp this morning and she will be staying overnight because I don't think I will be able to give her the care she needs tonight. If anybody else has had this API procedure, I need to hear that it's not that bad. And if it really was bad, please lie about it. |

| I feel for you, I really get nervous about the dentist. I had a root canal a little over a year ago, and I was one of the rare people that the novocaine didn't work as it should. Something to do with the way my nerves were laying or something. I've known a lot of people that have had root canals, and nobody had the problem that I did. You are going to be like most everybody and it won't we a big deal for you. Regarding my aftermath, I had a script for Vicoden, too, and as bad as my pain was, I never used it. One dose of regular old Advil did the trick.

| 2 Root Canals, no pain, no meds afterwards. The worst part of the procedure was walking into the office. Not sure what the other procedure you are having is, but I hope you do well, little pain, and back to normal in a few days |

| Hi Boopster. I used to be a dental assistant. You will be numb from the anesthetic and not feel anything. Once the anesthetic wears off you may feel a bruised feeling (it also depends on your tolerance to pain) from the apico. Follow your dentist's advise regarding pain meds etc. Also, do not eat or drink anything hot while you are still numb because you could burn yourself and not even know it. Sending good thoughts and you will be fine!!!! |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Yeah - the root canal is no big deal for me. I've had 7 of them before. Except for the last one, where I had an abscess so bad come up suddenly that one whole side of my face doubled in size and I ended up with a black eye. The endo drained the abscess and that hurt like he$$. But usually with a canal, the anesthetic shots are the worst part. My freakout is over the API. They get to the root of the tooth through your gum, not through the surface of the tooth. through the gum! With a sharp object! And with stitches afterward. I made the terrible mistake of googling apicoectomy and saw pictures. I'm not usually a wimp. I've had my gallbladder, half my thyroid, and one ovary removed ( all the old-fashioned way ) and was just fine. But with this one I'm quickly reverting from wacky old biddy to three year-old. I may even cry at the endo's office, that's how bizarre this is making me feel. Wonder if a nice double margarita would make things better or worse... |

| Well I had a couple of root canals and they were fine. It's gum sugery that really hurts, and I think I moaned in pain for 4 days right through vicodin with that. I hope your procedure goes off without a hitch. Bring your ipod!

| I can not tell a lie. I thought I was going to either pass out or vomit. I DON'T WANT ANOTHER. Hope you make out ok. However I didn't feel anything until the anesthetic wore off. |

| Poor thing. I agree that root canals are no longer bad at all except for the fuzzy way that shot makes me feel. Am not sure what the other procedure is so all I can say is my heart goes out to you. I am not a very willing dental patient either! Let us know how it goes. |

| I have had root canels and some dental surgery. Usually you are so out of it, you don't realize anything and the pain meds help alot. I had dental surgery and was so out that when I came too the doctor said, Congradulations you have an 8lb. baby boy. I said, Oh, I don't remember being pregnant. lol!!! They all got a big laugh out of that. You will do fine, just get plenty of rest, take your pain meds. and eat jello. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I'm home from the endodontist and man! The root canal took so long they had to postpone the surgery. It wasn't bad - I didn't even feel the shot. But the canals were so tiny it took a long time to find them and make sure they were cleaned out. I can tell I'm going to have a black eye and a pretty good headache, but probably not enough to need the Vicodin. And I'm exhausted - probably in part because of the letdown from not getting the surgery over with. Surgery is rescheduled for Tuesday morning. |

| Well, at least 50% over and that is good. Sounds like a tough session. Cuddle up with your dog(s) and try to forget this day. I will be thinking of you Tuesday and pray that part at least will go fast. |
